Police Log: Burglars Mistake Elephant Dung For Pot; Ankle Monitor Tips Cops To Wanted Man

Bank hold-up, drunk limo driver, BART thefts, and more from Sept. 12 to 18.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Sept. 12 and 18 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

Wednesday, Sept. 18
  • Man flees to San Jose with stolen motorcycle.  A motorcycle reported stolen from a resident at Carriage House Apartments was spotted by officers traveling on southbound I-880 near Warren Avenue. A patrol unit attempted to catch the driver, who was going in excess of 100 mph. A second officer caught up at I-880 and I-237, but the suspect refused to stop. Finally he exited in San Jose, and the pursuit was terminated.
  • Drunk limo driver. An officer observed a limousine being driven by a man he had dealt with the previous week, whom he knew to have a suspended license. The driver was stopped and also found to be drunk. He was arrested for both violations, and the 28-foot limo was towed.

Tuesday, Sept. 17
  • That wasn't pot you stole, by the way. Unknown suspects burglarized a vehicle parked on a home's front lawn on Third Street in Niles. While the auto was ransacked, the only item taken was a bag of elephant dung that the car's owner had received as a gag gift. It appears the burglars may have thought it was a bag of marijuana.
  • Masked trio rob Wells Fargo Bank. An employee was thrown to the ground during the robbery and one customer had to be transported to the hospital for chest pains from a previous medical condition. Details here.
  • Hit-and-runs with property damage were reported: on the 39400 block of Paseo Padre Parkway; in the area of Auto Mall Parkway and Christy Street; and Mowry Avenue and Paseo Padre.
  • Injury collisions included: on Paseo Padre Parkway and Kaiser Drive, in the Ardenwood area, involving a vehicle and a bicycle; and Fremont Boulevard at Delaware Drive.

Monday, Sept. 16
  • Where'd you go, driver? An officer stopped a Toyota sedan at 11:20 p.m. on Adobe Drive near Cabrillo Drive when the driver jumped out and fled over a fence. A female passenger also attempted to run and hide on the side of a house, but surrendered to police and was arrested for allegedly being under the influence. The driver was not found.
  • Mom frantic over possible missing 6-year-old. A mother of a 6-year-old girl at Weibel Elementary School called police to report her child missing after waiting for her after school for over an hour. Several officers and CSOs responded with an hour-long search and a “Code Red” community message. A resident, responding to the alert, called in to say the girl was a few blocks away near the school. Officers found the child, who was visibly shaken. She said she "ran away" because her older sister was teasing her. There were no suspicious circumstances -- just a happy, relieved family.
  • Suspicious man allegedly harassed girl, resisted arrest. Story here.
  • Suspect arrested in Union City indecent exposure case. Story here.
Sunday, Sept. 15
  • Teen car thief at it again. An officer spotted a 2004 Chrysler Sebring traveling east at excessive speeds on Decoto Road, and finally caught up to it near 11th Street in Union City. The 17-year-old male driver had an active felony warrant for stealing a vehicle, and ... the Chrysler he was driving was reported stolen from Antioch. He was arrested.
  • Residential burglaries were reported on the 48000 block of Carlsbad Road, and on the 40400 block of Landon Avenue.
Saturday, Sept. 14
  • Booze and snack theft gets ugly. Loss prevention workers at Safeway 5 Corners detained a woman for allegedly stealing snacks and alcohol, and her male companion, who decided to intervene and punched the security employee. The male was arrested for battery, as well as his outstanding petty theft warrant.  The female lied about her identity to police, and was arrested for commercial burglary and false identification.
Friday, Sept. 13
  • Newark man arrested for forcing kiss on teen co-worker. The 38-year-old suspect was arrested on a single charge of molesting a child under the age of 18, Fremont police said. Story here.
  • Ankle bracelet was the giveaway. Washington Hospital employees called police after an intoxicated 49-year-old male came in the emergency room wearing an ankle monitor. He was a wanted parolee and arrested.
  • Neither borrower nor lender be. A man was placed under citizen's arrest for battery and subsequently jailed after a fight broke out between two men regarding a loan.
  • Motorcyclist expected to survive after suffering major injuries in accident with police car on Fremont Boulevard. Story here.
  • Residential burglaries were reported on Parkmeadow Drive, Olive Street and Vargas Road.
