Police Log: Mugged Church Worker; Shots Fired at Pedestrian; Flighty Burglar; Lassoed ATM

DUI crash on Walnut, and more incidents from April 11 to 17.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between April 11 to 17 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17

  • Four arrested in brutal attack to “deface” Bollywood promoter’s ex-wife: Read more here. 
  • Shots fired. A man told police that while walking on Peralta Boulevard and Maple Street he was shot at by a male in a white, four-door, older-model Honda. Several spent casings were located in the roadway, and the case is under investigation. 

TUESDAY, APRIL 16

  • Not funny gunplay. Two teens -- a male juvenile and an 18-year-old on probation -- were arrested near Fremont Boulevard and Alder Avenue for allegedly brandishing a handgun after a citizen notified police that the pair were fooling around with the weapon and even pointed it at her. The suspects attempted to run from the police and discard the handgun, which was recovered.

MONDAY, APRIL 15

  • Fremont-branded battery found in Boston Marathon explosive: Read more.
  • DUI crash. A 50-year-old man was arrested for suspected driving under the influence after causing a mulitple-vehicle crash at Walnut Avenue and Civic Center Drive. One vehicle even crashed into a building. The suspect was treated for injuries at a local hospital and arrested on the felony charge. 

SUNDAY, APRIL 14

  • Like Big Bird? The caretaker of Mill Creek Road home called police to report a burglary in progress after hearing what sounded like someone walking around upstairs in a residence that was supposed to be vacant. Police identified the intruder as a bird.
  • Church worker robbed. The caretaker of a Driscoll Road church was taking out trash at 11:25 p.m. when he was knocked unconscious and robbed of his wallet. The suspect was possibly an area transient, and the case is under investigation. 
  • ATM theft. A free-standing ATM machine inside of a closed gas station at Blacow Road and Mowry Avenue was stolen by suspects, who smashed the store window, looped cable around the ATM and then used a vehicle to pull it out the front doors.

SATURDAY, APRIL 13

  • Amtrak derails near Fremont, but no one hurt. Story here.
  • Robbed by kids on bikes. A man told police he was struck in the face and robbed of his cell phone and car keys by two male teens on Fremont Boulevard and Darwin Drive. The suspects were described as 17 to 18 years old, one Hispanic and the other black. The two were reportedly riding bicycles.

FRIDAY, APRIL 12

  • Two-alarm fire destroys home: Story here.
  • Newark lumber company chemical spill. Read more.
  • Man hit by car last week in Union City dies in hospital. Story here.
  • Man with large knife. A transient man displaying a large knife while walking on Fremont Boulevard near Beacon Avenue was arrested by officers.
  • Dog shot. A shooting report on the 4200 block of  Stevenson Boulevard was investigated by officers, who learned that two dogs were in a fight and a man shot and killed one with an AR15. Animal Control assisted with the call. 
  • Stolen Styles. Two women reportedly went into the Styles for Less store at the Hub, grabbed clothing and fled. The suspected thieves were described as: a black female in her 20s, with facial piercings and wearing a beanie; and a heavyset black female, between 20 and 30, wearing a white T-shirt and pink tank-top.

THURSDAY, APRIL 11

  • Attempted sexual assault behind school. Details here.
  • Armed robber takes zip. An armed robber reportedly took off empty-handed after a stick-up on Roberts Avenue and Washington Boulevard. The victim told police she was approached by a woman who offered her a ride, and when she declined, the suspect produced a gun and ordered the victim and her friend to hand over their jewelry. The suspect then fled, however, without taking anything, and was last seen traveling southbound on Roberts in a white vehicle.
