Police Log: Bowling Brawl; Bad 'E' Trip; Stick-Ups; School Scare

Notable incidents encountered March 7 to 13.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between March 7 and 13 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

Public invitation: "Coffee with Cops" is set March 27 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Ardenwood Forest Club House, 5016 Paseo Padre Parkway, with Interim Chief of Police Richard Lucero, patrol officers, command staff and crime specialists in attendance. Details here.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13

Bomb scare at junior high.

  • A bomb threat prompted a lockdown at Thornton Junior High School. Details here. Meanwhile, on the same day in Pleasanton, a shooting threat scrawled on a bathroom wall rattled a high school community, and a bomb threat was also reported at a Tracy school. Fremont police are investigating the Thornton incident and made one arrest. 

Late-night Subway robbery.

    A strong-arm robbery was reported by en employee closing Subway Sandwich shop in Charter Square in which a masked man ran into the store, shoved the worker toward the register and demanded cash.
TUESDAY, MARCH 12

"Most Wanted Van."

  • A 2000 Ford Econoline van was reported stolen at 11 a.m. from a Fremont street. The LoJack-equipped vehicle transmitted an alert at 1 p.m. from Central Avenue in Newark, but location attempts were unsuccessful. A subsequent alert at 3:30 p.m. led officers to the van on Enea Common. Ford vans and work trucks are second to Hondas as the most popular vehicles stolen, according to area law enforcement.

Home break-in on Blaisdell.

  • Jewelry and cash were taken in a residential burglary reported 5:50 p.m. on Blaisdell Way. The break-in occurred between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

MONDAY, MARCH 11

Stick-up at GameStop.

  • Armed robbery was reported at the Fremont Hub GameStop. The suspect fled on foot after taking an iPad and cash. Details here.

  Theft thwarted at Fry's

  • Two Redwood city men, 33 and 38, were arrested after attempted theft at Fry's Electronics. Officers arriving at 10:15 a.m. to a possible theft-in-progress found a suspicious vehicle parked near an emergency exit and one occupant entering the store. The "shopper" spotted police as he exited and took off running through the Osgood Road parking lot. He was apprehended, as was his getaway driver, who also attempted to flee. Police recovered  methamphetamine, computers, credit cards and other goods from the pair, who were were booked on felony charges.

Brawl over gal at Cloverleaf Bowl.

  • A fight broke out at 1:30 a.m. at the bar inside Hillman's Cloverleaf Family Bowl. Two of the men involved were reportedly fighting over a woman. One man was arrested for alleged police obstruction; the other three, two males and a female, were arrested for suspected public intoxication.

More gang tagging.

  • Six new reports of graffiti were made near Dusterberry Way and Central Avenue, with the red tags reading, "VNF X4," "VNF," "XIV," "SK," "NSF" and "NORTE."

SUNDAY, MARCH 10

Armed robbery of Fremont Boulevard pharmacy.

  • Two men armed with handguns reportedly robbed Haller's Pharmacy of the drug Oxycodone. The suspects, described as African-American males wearing masks, fled on foot westbound through store's parking lot on the 37300 block of Fremont Boulevard.

Gang tagging.

  • Gang graffiti, suspected to be the work of Newark Norteno gang "YNL," was reported near Dusterberry Way and Hansen Avenue.

Possible suicide on I-680.

  • Early-morning pedestrian death was likely suicide. Details here.

Hello, housekeeping?

  • A Fremont man, 32, was arrested for allegedly being under the influence of controlled substances after he strolled naked into the lobby of a Newark Motel 6 asking for a towel. Officers contacted the man in his room at 8:47 p.m., where he was placed under arrest and wearing pants.

Weapon arrest near a day spa.

  • A male was arrested for alleged possession of a dangerous weapon after a disturbance near a day spa on Paseo Padre Parkway.

Assault, threats, arrest at Fremont BART.

  • The Bart Police Department reported a patron in the bus zone at 6:19 a.m. was verbally threatened and nearly punched by an unknown man in what police described as an unprovoked attack. The victim called for help, and officers located the suspect, who was then arrested on an existing $85,000 DUI warrant, a $,5000 warrant for disturbing the peace, and the new charges of suspected assault and criminal threats.

SATURDAY, MARCH 9

Citizen calls lead to two DUI busts.

  • Fremont police report calls from citizens led to two arrests of motorists for suspected driving under the influence: a female, 49; and a male, 27.

Evicted man arrested for trespassing.

  • A man was arrested for alleged trespassing after returning to an apartment complex along 3400 Stevenson Boulevard, from which he was evicted the previous week.

Drunk in public -- never pretty.

  • Three individuals were arrested in separate incidents for suspected public intoxication: a man, 42, at an "out-of-hand" party on Aquado Court; a 29-year-old man reportedly passed out in bushes at Becerra Drive and Tampico Road; and a woman, 23, who was reportedly covered in blood after breaking her nose, at a family gathering on Philadelphia Place.

Possible drug-fueled, bloody mess of an arrest.

  • A Newark man, 27, fled his family's home, after they alerted police at 7 p.m. that he was possibly overdosing on methamphetamine, and hid out at  AllCare Veterinary Hospital, Thornton Avenue, Newark. The man, who reportedly punched out the plate-glass window at the clinic, was found in the parking lot bleeding from a severed artery and severe lacerations to his right arm. When police approached, the suspect began swinging his arm towards officers covering them with blood. Additional officers arrived at the scene, and the man was taken into custody with help from a police dog/K-9 partner, who possibly bit the suspect. Fremont Police Department also assisted with the arrest of the man on charges including battery on an officer, burglary, child abuse, resisting arrest and assault. He is currently being treated at a local hospital and in police custody. Previous story here.

FRIDAY, MARCH 8

Male Tasered, arrested after bad drug trip.

  • An 18-year-old man was Tasered twice before his arrest at a Gilbert Court home for suspected possession of the drug Ecstacy and resisting arrest, after breaking a picture frame and holding officers at bay with the glass shards. The suspect, reportedly clad in only a T-shirt, was trashing the house and having a bad drug experience. He was Tasered once to subdue him, but began resisting police again, requiring a second Taser activation, police said. Police said three indiviudals were also using “shrooms,”  and a man, 19, allegedly in possession of baggies of "E," was arrested for drug possession.

Knock, knock. Who's there? Three suspicious men.

  • A resident refused to open the door of a home on the 4300 block of Dorsey Avenue when three males came knocking and asking for  someone who did not live there. The trio then sped off in a car the resident described as a silver import, possibly a Honda.

THURSDAY, MARCH 7

Attempted carjacking.

  • A woman reported getting into her car in the 500 block of Mowry Avenue when she was approached by a male who demanded the vehicle, a BMW 535i. The victim remotely disabled the auto, which prevented the suspect from getting it into gear and driving. Police arrived and set up a perimeter, but the suspect fled on foot. He was not located.
