Police: Driver Who Struck, Killed Pedestrian Thought He 'Hit a Bird'

The collision occurred around 6 a.m. on Washington Avenue near Olive Avenue.

A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle in Fremont this morning, a police spokeswoman said. 

Fremont Police Spokeswoman Geneva Bosques told NBC Bay Area News in an interview that the driver involved in the collision told dispatchers he thought he had "hit a bird" during his call to 911 shortly after the collision.
The collision was reported on Washington Boulevard near Olive Avenue sometime around 6 a.m., police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

According to a report by NBC, the driver of the black corvette, who was reportedly on his way to work at the time of the collision, stopped right after he struck the woman and called 911. 

Police have not yet released the identity of the pedestrian.

This was the second major collision in Fremont today. A 4-year-old girl is in critical condition after a suspected drunken driving collision occurred at 12:15 a.m. this morning.

The collisions were less than two miles apart.
