Crime Log: Woman Carjacks Elderly Man; Husband Helps Save Wife’s Life

A summary of recent crimes reported in Fremont.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 as released by the Fremont Police Department. 

THURSDAY, JAN. 31

Man arrested after lighting garbage can on fire

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson after lighting a garbage on fire behind the Safeway shopping center at Five corners. The suspect was described as a white male wearing a red bathrobe and a jean jacket. A suspect matching the description was located and arrested.

Strong-arm robbery at the Hub

A victim was walking in the Fremont Hub parking lot near the Target store when he was approached from behind. The suspect grabbed the victim’s backpack but the victim resisted and held on to the backpack. The suspect then hit him in the nose and knocked him unconscious. When he regained consciousness, the suspect and the backpack were gone.

FRIDAY, FEB. 1

Package theft

A package was stolen from the doorstep of a home on the 45000 block of Grimmer Boulevard. The victim recorded video surveillance of the theft.

Burglaries

A home was broken into on Shawnee Way. Jewelry was stolen.

A home was burglarized on the 4300 block of Calypso Terrace between 6 p.m. and midnight. A purse and jewelry were taken. A neighbor said an unknown blue 1980s Oldsmobile or Cadillac was parked in the area during that time frame.

SATURDAY, FEB. 2                                    

20-year-old found dead

A 20-year-old man was found dead at a home on the 4700 block of Valpey Park Avenue. Responding officers found a chemistry set with several flasks and bottles containing chemicals. It appeared that the victim may have been mixing chemicals prior to his death. Officers evacuated the home and a called a haz mat team to the scene. The haz mat team ventilated the home and deemed it safe for re-entry. In the end, authorities considered the death to be accidental.

Man arrested for stealing laser pointer

A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of stealing a laser pointer from Fry’s. Security watched the man steal the item. When he walked outside, an officer was waiting for him. The suspect was arrested and booked.

Gang members vandalize apartment

Two Norteno gang members used the butt of handguns to smash windows of an apartment at 4250 Central Ave. They suspects shouted “Norte” while they broke the windows and were seen carrying their guns in their waistbands. They were seen driving an older white Ford Explorer with no plates. The same vehicle was called in several minutes before as a suspicious vehicle at 4222 Central Ave.

SUNDAY, FEB. 3

Couple arrested for child endangerment

Officers responded to a home on the 38000 block of Fremont Boulevard on a report of a civil dispute. When they arrive, they find the home trashed with narcotics easily accessible to three children. The mother, a parolee, and her husband are arrested on suspicion of multiple child endangerment and narcotics charges. The children are taken into protective custody.

Bar manager attacked at Coaches

A bar manager at Coaches was attacked after kicking out several drunk patrons. A 25-year-old man threatened to come back with a gun. Officers responded to the scene, however, and arrested the man. No gun was located.

MONDAY, FEB. 4

Woman robbed at gunpoint on Fremont Boulevard

A woman was robbed at gunpoint while walking in the area of Fremont Boulevard and Sundale Drive. The man covered his face with a black masked, stole cash and ran away on foot. Officers searched the area but could not locate the suspect.

Husband helps save wife’s life

Police received a report of a 67-year-old woman not breathing. Fremont fire department instructed the husband on how to perform CPR. Officers arrived shortly after and took over the CPR procedure. Officers felt a pulse and transported the woman to a hospital. The woman, who has a history of seizures, was last reported in stable condition.

Residential burglary

A flat screen TV and power saw were stolen from a home on Puttenham Way.

TUESDAY, FEB. 5

Necklace snatching on Ardenwood Boulevard

A man was robbed of his necklace in the area of Ardenwood Boulevard and Commerce Drive around 5:45 p.m. The suspect fled on foot.

Woman robbed at gunpoint

A woman was robbed of her cell phone at gunpoint on Lana Terrace at about 7:30 p.m. The suspect fled on foot.

Attempted robbery on Pennsylvania Avenue

A woman was grabbed from behind while walking to her apartment on the 3500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue at 7:50 p.m. The woman screamed, causing the suspect to run off. The woman was not injured.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 6

Man spies on children exercising at elementary school with binoculars

A suspicious man was parked in a brown van near Maloney Elementary School, staring at children through binoculars. When a custodian approached the van, the man drove off.

Woman arrested after carjacking, assault, hit-and-run

A 29-year-old woman led authorities on a chase from Fremont to Hayward after carjacking and elderly man. The woman was involved in a fight with three women near Centerville Saw and Tool on the 3500 block of Peralta Boulevard. The women chased after the woman, who forced an elderly man out of his car. The women tried to held the elderly man but the suspect got a hold of the car keys and fled the area.

Shortly after, officers received hit-and-run calls from Fremont Boulevard and Decoto round and Fremont Boulevard and Ferry Lane. In the second hit-and-run, the suspect rammed into the victim’s vehicle multiple times. The suspect vehicle was eventually located in Hayward near 2nd and B streets where the driver did another hit-and-run to get away. Officers chased after the suspect, who crashed into a pickup truck. The suspect then tried to run on foot but was arrested on a number of charges.

Car burglaries

Three cars were broken into at the Sundale South Apartments.
