Assemblymember Wieckowski Holding School Supply Drive for Teachers

Donations can be dropped off at Wieckowski's office in Fremont throughout the month.

In an effort to help local teachers, Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski is holding a school supply drive throughout the month of August.

The supply drive will benefit K-12 teachers in Wieckowski’s district, which includes Fremont, Newark, Milpitas, Santa Clara and San Jose.

“Every year teachers struggle to provide necessary school supplies and instructional materials for their students with very little resources,” Wieckowski said. “Many end up reaching into their own pockets to make up the difference.  As a community, we can show local teachers how much we appreciate them and their sacrifice by helping to provide the essential classroom items.”

According to AdoptAClassroom.org, 15 million children in the country live in households without access to resources and supplies. And, according to the National School Supply and Equipment Association, 99.5 percent of public school teachers say they spend their own money on classroom materials. In the 2012-13 school year, those teachers spent an average of $945.

Wieckowski’s office is asking for the public to contribute common materials and items, such as white paper both lined and unlined, colored paper, pencils, colored pens, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, staplers and staples, Kleenex, paper towels, calculators and paper clips.
