Officer Kills Dog That Bit Elderly Man, Grandson

The dog terrorized a Fremont neighborhood before charging at police and fire personnel.

A Fremont police officer was forced to put down a loose pit bull after it attacked an elderly man and his grandson on Saturday, police said.

According to the Fremont Police Department, a resident on Blaisdell Way in Niles reported that a grey and white pit bull was terrorizing the neighborhood and had attacked the pair. The man suffered a severe injury to his hand while the child was bitten on the foot. They were taken to a neighbor’s home until emergency responders arrived and were later transported to a hospital.

The caller said the dog was “attacking anything and everything in their yard” and that community members had locked themselves in their cars and homes, according to police.

When the first officer arrived to the scene, the dog immediately charged at him. The officer used a baton to keep the dog at bay and tried to get the dog into the back of his patrol car. Instead, the dog took the baton, ran away and “destroyed” it, police said.

A Fremont Fire Department unit later arrived to the scene to provide aide to the victims but were unaware that the dog was still loose. When they exited their truck, the pit bull charged at them, police said. Two firefighters ran back into the truck while a third had to climb on top of the truck.

Police said the dog then turned to the officer and charged at him, forcing the officer to shoot the pit bull one time.

The dog was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dog did not have any tags and was unknowns to residents in the neighborhood, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the dog to call the Fremont Police Department at 510-790-6800 and select option 3.
