A 20-year-old Newark gang member was arrested Friday in connection to two shootings in Fremont, police said.

According to the Fremont Police Department, Rigoberto Cornejo is suspected of shooting a man in the leg following a fight at Los Cerritos Community Park at about 7:45 p.m. Thursday night. The park is located near Brookvale Elementary School.

Witnesses attending a softball game at the park reported hearing multiple shots being fired from a white car, which sped off toward Nicolette Avenue.

Readers told Patch that children were in the area and that bullets struck a nearby concession stand and a parked car.

About 30 minutes later, police received a call from a local hospital that a 20-year-old Fremont man was being treated for a gunshot wound to his leg. The wound was not life-threatening, police said.

Investigators identified Cornejo as the shooter in the Los Cerritos Park shooting and tracked him down Friday afternoon in Redwood City where he was arrested.

Police said that Cornejo was also wanted in connection to a shooting that occurred in Fremont in on April 17 in the area of Belevoria Court and Maple Street.

Cornejo was arrested on suspicion of a number of charges including assault with a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement, possessing a firearm near a school campus, discharging a firearm from a car, being a gang member in possession of a firearm.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
