A man was critically injured in a car fire in Fremont on Sunday morning, and police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide attempt, a police spokeswoman said.

Police responded to a report of a man on fire in the 47000 block of Bayside Parkway at 11:40 a.m., police said.

A female employee at Boston Scientific had noticed a black four-door 2011 Audi driving through the parking lot and thought it was odd to see a car there on a Sunday, police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

Several minutes later, the employee heard an explosion at the rear of the business and informed a male coworker. The Audi had caught fire, and the coworker pulled the driver out of the car and used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames, Bosques said.

Police found a propane tank in the front passenger seat of the car, she said.

The driver, a 48-year-old San Jose man, was taken to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries and remained there this morning, Bosques said.
