A 20-year-old Gilroy man was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI after fatally striking a construction worker and injuring another alongside Interstate Highway 680 in Milpitas early this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Adrian Valencia Sanchez was arrested after emergency personnel extricated him from a 2000 Nissan Altima damaged in the crash and transported him to a hospital, according to the CHP.

The CHP was dispatched at 2:41 a.m. about a collision involving a white work truck and a silver Nissan sedan on the right shoulder of northbound Highway 680 south of Scott Creek Road.

Officers found that the Nissan had struck two construction workers and a white Ford F-350 pickup truck, CHP officials said.

The two workers, both Vacaville residents, had been standing near the back of the truck and were removing a construction sign just before the collision, according to the CHP.

Sanchez left the roadway, veered onto the right shoulder and smashed into the two men and the truck, CHP officials said.

One of the workers, who was 34 years old, died at the scene. His name was not yet being released by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The other worker, a 26-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, according to the CHP.

Sanchez suffered major injuries and was also taken to the hospital prior to his arrest, CHP officials said.
