Rep. Honda Announces Winner of Congressional Website Redesign

Rep Mike Honda picked the winner of his congressional website redesign project. Tiffany Reed designed the winning website design for Congressman Honda.

Today, Rep. Michael Honda (CA-17) officially announced that Tiffany Reed is the winner of his innovative project to further improve civic engagement with Congress. The Congressman redesigned his website once again – using a technique called crowd-sourcing – to help make his website more accessible his constituents.

Launched in late January on CrowdSpring.com, designers mocked up 26 images and formats for consideration by Rep Honda.  California’s 17th District constituents then voted on the designs and the final design was chosen based on constituent votes, design functionality, and office criteria vis-à-vis usability.

Rep. Honda has always been in the front of web trends, paving the way.  The Congressman’s current website was crowd sourced, the first ever use of the technique in Congress, using a similar method. His websites have always been consistently recognized for their outstanding designs, having won 4 Gold and 2 Silver Mouse Awards by the Congressional Management Foundation (CMF).  Rep. Honda is the only Member of the House of Representatives to be chosen for a website award from CMF each time it was awarded.

“Our first crowdsourcing project,” said Rep. Honda “ushered in a new era of government transparency.  Since then, many other entities within the federal government and here in Congress have followed suit with their own crowdsourcing initiatives. This time, we took it a step further to involve constituents in the decision-making process on what features they want on their website. It is my hope that this initiative further democratizes the way we interact with the public, interfacing not only with our constituents, but with the design community in general. “

The purpose of Rep. Honda’s website redesign/crowd-sourcing was to continue his goal of sweeping in Government 2.0, where the public’s ability to access and provide advice to Members of Congress is enhanced by new technology and new online participation.“Congress must take advantage of Web 2.0 technologies,” said Rep. Honda, “to transform the relationship between citizens and government. Instead of viewing the public as a customer for services, I believe that we should empower citizens to become our partners in shaping the future of our nation.”

As the Representative covering the heart of Silicon Valley, Rep. Honda has been on the front lines of pushing technological innovation as a means for better citizen engagement; from acting as founding co-Chair of the Democratic Caucus New Media Working, designed to promote use of technology in Congress to pushing for access to bulk legislative data.

Really? It isn't a private family matter? Then why was the Sheriff of SF County allowed to make thisRead More claim and plea bargain down so he could keep his guns?

What if I went to my boss and told him he would now pay me 100% more? He would laugh and probablyRead More fire me. The truth is we have no choice but to pay this 100% increase. We are taxed to death in this country partially to pay for crap like this and now this?????? Your organization already receives 60 million$ a year of our money however we are still at your mercy when you decide to raise our rates by 100% furthermore yours is the only service that has no option to pay online without a outrageous service fee???? And you say we should be "glad" FUCK YOU!

Everybody is serviced with the water through these old pipes. No matter how much you use, if yourRead More water is interupted for weeks or months after a major earthquake, you home is rendered "UNLIVABLE". They could have raised your "TAX ASSESSMENT" each year just like Garbage and Yard Disposal but that would be unfair to the homes that are unoccupied or are rentals. The rental owner would just raise the rents to cover it but they ususally take a 200% bonus on the rent so the landloard can take a "piece of the Action". Once a Tax Assessment goes on your property tax, it never comes off. Remember, the Water is FREE...it is the service that gets it from the source to your kitchen sink or bath that costs money. Be Glad the Oil and Gas companies have not made your water unfit to drink in Amameda County....YET.
