'Celebration of Life' For Coach Ingram Set For April 21

Don't call it a memorial, say organizers of an event to commemorate the career and contributions of the Fremont resident and Washington High football coach.

Family, friends and fans of Coach Jim Ingram will gather on Sunday, April 21 at the Washington High School gym to celebrate the life and career of the man who coached more than a thousand football players over some 40 years.

Coach I, as he was known, died earlier this month. He was 80.

Considered legendary for the tenure of his career and the depth of his committment to student athletics, Coach I is remembered fondly by former students like Fremont Mayor Bill Harrison, who played offensive tackle for Washington High in the late 1980s.

Harrison and fellow Washington High football alumnus Mike Jacinto led efforts to commission and place a statute (see above) honoring Coach Ingram at Tak Fudenna Stadium. It was installed shortly before his death.

Aaron Ingram, grandson of Coach I and now a football coach himself, said the April 21 gathering at Washington High will start at noon, and will have an upbeat tone in keeping with the concept of celebration.

Patch will have more details as the event nears.
