Video: Fremont Hopes To Boost Its Score As An Innovation Destination

Mayor Bill Harrison talks about Fremont plans to ignite a jobs boom that will benefit Newark, Union City and other East Bay communities.

 

Innovation is the new progress. Communities everywhere are vying to attract high-tech, biotech, clean energy, advanced manufacturing and similar companies that pay higher wages.

Thursday morning Fremont officials and business leaders converged at Tesla Motors to hear a scorecard of the city's quotient as a destination for innovation.

That 44-page report (2013 Innovation Scorecard) is attached to this story in PDF form but the findings boiled down to a number: 76 out of a possible 100.

The report noted hurdles that Fremont must clear to raise its innovation score to 85 percent over the next five years.

These include:

  • help businesses zip through the development process
  • coordinate permits, assist in working with local utility providers and run interference with regional agencies as needed
  • focus on serving the expansion needs of growth companies
