Government Shutdown Could Impact Local Meals on Wheels Program
LIFE ElderCare, which serves 350 elderly Tri-City residents daily, receives a third of its funding from the federal government, according to news reports.
The government shutdown is hitting closer to home.
According to KTVU, Fremont-based nonprofit LIFE ElderCare may be forced to temporarily suspend its vital Meals on Wheels program.
The program provides 350 elderly residents in Fremont, Union City and Newark with healthy meals each day. The program receives $100,000 — a third of its annual funding — from the federal government, KTVU reports.

LIFE ElderCare Executive Director Patricia Osage told KTVU that the organization relies on federal employees to process the paperwork that allows them to purchase food. With federal offices closed, there’s no one to call for help.
While the organization is able to get by and serve local seniors for now, it may not be able to do so in 10 days.

“After that it is going to be a problem,” Osage told KTVU.
