Election 2012: Still 140,000 Ballots To Count In Alameda County

The outcome of some races won't be known for days

Alameda County officials still have an estimated 140,000 ballots to count before they can certify Tuesday's election.

David Macdonald, the county registrar of voters, estimated there are 100,000 vote-by-mail ballots turned in at the polls on Tuesday. There's another 40,000 provisional ballots.

Right now, the official number of ballots cast in the county is almost 400,000. If all the late ballots were found to be allowable, that would increase the voter turnout to 540,000.

These ballots probably won't all be counted until sometime next week.

They could determine several close ballot items.

Among them is Measure B1, the countywide proposal that would raise the local sales tax to pay for transportation projects. Right now, just short of the 66.7 percent it needs for approval.

There's also the 18th Assembly district race. In that contest, Alameda Vice Mayor over Peralta Community College District board member Abel Guillen. It's unknown how many uncounted ballots are from this district, which encompasses San Leandro, Oakland and Alameda.

Though the gap is wider, it's a similar story for the 20th Assembly district race where Hayward councilman Bill over optometrist Jennifer Ong. The district includes Union City, Hayward and north Fremont, along with Castro Valley, Sunol, Ashland, Cherryland and San Lorenzo.

While the uncounted ballots may not have huge impacts on smaller local races, there are some that could be turned around.

The late ballots could affect the outcome of one of the two San Leandro City Council races. In that one, incumbent Ursula Reed holds a slim 97-vote lead.

Measure L, San Leandro's $39-per-home school parcel tax, also hangs in the balance. just shy of the 66.7 percent needed for passage.

Again, it's unknown how many of the late ballots are from San Leandro.

In local elections in Fremont, Lily Mei hovers over Reshma Karipineni by a 712-vote lead for the third available seat on the Fremont Unified School District's Board of Education. Ann Crosbie is only slightly ahead of Mei with 817 more votes and Desrie Campbell is top overall with 19,454 votes — a 738-vote lead above Crosbie.

In the Fremont mayor's race, Bill Harrison leads with 1,964 more votes than his closest opponent Steve Cho. And Cho told The Fremont Argus that he's not ready to concede. Read that report here.

Measure A1, the could also be impacted by the late ballots. The measure has 62.7 percent of the vote. It would need a large chunk of the late ballots to get over the 66.7 percent hurdle.

Under state law, the county has until Dec. 4 to certify the election.

Why move,I'm smoking marijuana & gloating while I type ! While Pete may have stayed a term too long we still have a Democrat holding the seat & we have several more suitable candidates waiting in the wings for 2014. In light of legalization in Washington,Colorado & Detroit & Massachusetts becoming the 18th state to approve medical use,the Feds will have to capitulate to the will of the people ! We're awaiting two Federal Court decisions now,one to force the Feds to justify their classification of marijuana as being more dangerous than heroin & methamphetamine & the second is a voters rights suit in Southern California. Congress allowed Washington DC voters to approve the medical use of marijuana, yet the Feds claim it has no medical value & refuse to respect California's voter approved measure. The Constitution affords all Americans "equal protection" & since Washington DC voters were allowed to vote for it,Californians must be given the right to do so & we all ready have ! Hence federal law will be unenforceable as long as one complies with their states guidelines. 80% of Americans now support medical use, over 50% favor legalization & even DARE has dropped marijuana from their curriculum ! Hell now that the elections over Obama can reclassify marijuana by executive order to reward us for our votes & patience,it won't cost him any votes now ! Look for the Feds to remove all federal laws except for interstate transport & leave marijuana law to each states own discretion soon !

Pete stayed about 10 terms too long. Yes, Swalwell is a Democrat. So what? Do I hate him for being a Democrat. No, I don't. I'm not a big right winger here. I voted for Swalwell in the June primary as well. In fact, I'm looking forward to the new field of Democrats in 2016. I don't like Obama because he is an extreme left winger. But, the next field will be between Hillary Clinton, Joe Manchin, and Andrew Cuomo, and Joe Biden (God forbid). Other than Biden, I like all of them (moderates) and would consider voting for them over many of the potential GOP candidates. And since Biden as ZERO chance of ever winning the nomination, I'm quite happy about the future. As for your weed, I hope you're right about the Feds staying out. I believe in the 10th Amendment and believe that the people of CO and WA who voted to legalize should be able to enjoy their pot under compliance with state laws. The Feds should stay out of it. But, "progressive CA" isn't there yet. A majority voted against legalization.

The fact of the matter is that America's moved so far to the right since Reagan & the Warren Court that a moderate like Obama just seems to be an extreme left-winger now. You've got to admit that Romney was taken in by the Fox News led propaganda machine as badly as you & the rest of the Obama haters. Romney actually thought he was going to win when they started counting the votes & you ridiculed Nate Silver's spot on analysis of the polling data when I pointed out the disparity ! While everyone thought the election was all about the economy,I repeatedly pointed out that the extreme social agenda of "values voters" would doom Mitt's candicacy ! Attacks by the GOP nationwide on women's reproductive rights & gay marriage drove women & younger voters away from Republican Party candidates in droves ! The only stronghold in the electorate left for Republicans is old & angry white men & this one voted for Obama ! Don't worry about Biden he's destined to become Secretary of State or head of the CIA eventually (I understand they have an opening) & if you don't like him that means he has more than enough support to win if he decides to run ! What happened to all the voters that you said hadn't drank the same Kool-Aid as California voters ? Unless the Republicans kick the tea party crackpots & the Bible based bigots to the curb, losing by 126 Electoral College votes like Romney did is as close as they'll ever get again ! Now let's enjoy the GOP finger pointing, confusion, anger & rage !

All I said was that Rasumussen was a legitimate poll. I didn't ridicule your guy. I just said I didn't know who it was and didn't care. Turns out Gallup and Rasmussen both had it pretty close. They all showed a shift to Romney after the first debate followed by a shift back to Obama a couple of weeks ago. As far as Fox, yes, they all look pretty foolish... especially Dick Morris who I believe is now FINISHED after he foolishly predicted "Romney in a landslide" on Monday night. What a blowhard. I think that Sean Hannity owes Bob Beckel and Juan WIlliams dinner too.

Don't sell Dick Morris short,I thought he was done when he put that hooker on the phone with President Clinton when he worked for his administration ! FOX News on the other hand is a running joke,Karl Rove (his nickname "Turd Blossom" couldn't be more appropriate for his role in his $300 million dollar debacle) is trying to spin that Romney lost because "Democrats" suppressed the vote ! What a tool ! And what can you say about Sean "You know maybe Mexicans aren't so bad after all" Hannity,he's become a caricature of himself & a myth in his own mind ! While MSNBC certainly leans left & their commentators are certainly opinionated, the people at FOX either mislead their viewers on purpose, were collectively delusional or both ! In retrospect perhaps this may be a good thing because now millions of Americans won't be so easily duped by the biased political spin of the Republican Broadcast Network ! Like Bill Maher said about the election "It's a win,win situation - if Obama wins America wins & if Romney wins comedy wins ! Romney had too many flaws & those who contributed millions to his ultimately inept campaign should demand a refund (good luck with that) !
