City to Draft Plan for Massive Job and Housing Developments in South Fremont

A final draft community plan must be presented and adopted within 12 months.

The South Fremont and Warm Springs area may become a thriving, innovative “21st century jobs destination,” according to media reports.

The City Council approved city staff to continue drafting a community plan that calls for numerous business and residential projects during a work session last Tuesday.

According to the Fremont Bulletin, that plan is based on the creation of up to 4,000 housing units and 20,000 jobs.

The mixed-use plan will be rolled out and presented in segments so that city leaders and community members can provide feedback.

Studies have recommended that new developments include public services, schools and parks, along with offices, hotels and other business services, according to the Bulletin.

City leaders weighed in on the plan at last Tuesday’s meeting.

Vice Mayor Anu Natarajan said she wants the area to not only attract young professionals to work there, but live there, the Bulletin reports.

Councilwoman Suzanne Chan added that planners should not only focus on bringing in new businesses, but allow current Fremont businesses an opportunity to expand in the new work center.

City planners must now complete an environmental impact report, which will include information regarding zoning implementations, building density, phasing and timing, public facilities and more, the Bulletin reports.

A final community plan must be drafted and adopted by City Council in 12 months to ensure that it falls in line with BART’s plans to complete the Warm Springs extension by 2015, according to the Bulletin.

The City of Fremont’s chief planner Kelly Diekman told the newspaper that it would be impose to predict when ground might be broken on the project.
