Union City Marine Recently Home From Afghanistan Identified as Motorcyclist Killed in Suspected DUI Crash

A motorcyclist who was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver in Fremont early yesterday morning has been identified as a 23-year-old U.S. Marine who recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan, authorities said.

Andrew Silva of Union City was killed on his motorcycle when a suspected drunken driver in a Mini Cooper speeding on Fremont Boulevard struck him early this morning, according to police and an Alameda County coroner's deputy.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Silva was a U.S. Marine lance corporal who recently returned from serving in Afghanistan, the coroner's deputy said. Police began pursuing the driver, Alexander Yohn, 23, after an employee at a Fremont Taco Bell drive-thru reported him as being belligerent and possibly under the influence around 1:10 a.m., Bosques said.
 
Yohn, an Emeryville resident, was driving at a high speed and refused to stop, Bosques said. The suspect hit Silva, then crashed into a utility pole and fence, according to Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques. The Mini Cooper burst into flames at the intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Decoto Road near a bank, Bosques said.
 
She said Yohn fled ran to a nearby field, but police caught and arrested him.
