Suspect Threatens to Kill Himself in Hours-Long Standoff at Motel

No one was injured in the three-and-a-half hour ordeal.

A car theft suspect holed himself up inside of a Fremont motel, threatening to kill himself in a three-and-a-half hour standoff Monday.

According to the Fremont Police Department, the ordeal began at around 4:10 p.m. when a citizen reported seeing a male suspect searching through a Lexus parked near the Ross store at the Fremont Hub. The suspect then took off on foot to the Islander Motel, located across the street at 4101 Mowry Ave.

Officers responded to the area, determined the car to be stolen and went to the motel where the suspect was hiding inside of a room. The citizen who reported the suspicious activity identified the suspect as the same person inside of the stolen Lexus as the suspect looked out of a motel room window, according to police.

Police surrounded the building. Three occupants, two females and a juvenile, exited the room while the car theft suspect remained inside.

According to police, the male suspect was found seated on the bed. As officers approached, he put a knife to his throat, police said.

A hostage negotiation team was brought in and several rooms at the motel were evacuated as a precaution.

Officers negotiated with the suspect for about three-and-a-half hours before he eventually lowered the knife.

He was detained after a brief struggle and sent for a mental evaluation. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft upon his release.
