Police Warn Residents of IRS Phone Scam
Anyone who has been a victim of this scam is asked to call police.

Police in Fremont are warning residents of a scam that has been ongoing since early 2013. The scam begins with a resident receiving a call from a person claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service, police said.
The scammer tells the victim that they owe a large sum of money to the IRS and says if it is not paid, they will be arrested, according to police. Numerous residents have called in complaints of the scam. In a recent attempt, a scammer called a person at their work.
The suspect called a second time with the caller ID showing the call was coming from the Fremont Police Department. The suspect claimed he was from the department and used an actual name of an officer, according to police. Police said the actions of the suspect are becoming more desperate in an attempt to find vulnerable victims.
Residents are reminded that the Police Department does not participate in debt or tax collections and that the IRS does not request payment from a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.
Anyone who has been a victim of this scam is asked to report the incident to the IRS or call Fremont police at (510) 790-6800.
