Crime & Safety

Police Log: Giant Mojo's Brawl; Morrison Canyon Burglar Picks Wrong House

Tenacious resident collars burglar until police arrive, a doggie door break-in and more from Sept. 19 to 24.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Sept. 19 and 24 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

Tuesday, Sept. 24

  • Burglar evades apprehension. A burglary was reported via an alarm alert at an Osgood Road landscape business after a male cut a lock from the security gate. The alarm company monitored with live video surveillance the suspect as he stacked his loot. Arriving officers heard the suspect inside the fenced area. Newark Police Department assisted, sending two K9 units. A perimeter was set, and K9 officers indicated the suspect fled north to Tri City Rock. The suspect apparently caught on to the police response and fled. His vehicle was at the landscape business and towed as evidence.
  • Yet another gold-necklace robbery. In the Ardenwood area on Wellman Terrace at 1:30 p.m., a robbery was logged from a victim who said a Hispanic man, in his 20s, dark-skinned, 6 feet tall and 160 to 180 pounds and wearing a grey sweatshirt and jeans, stole her necklace. The suspect fled, jumped a fence and was last seen walking northbound on Deep Creek Road. Police urge residents  to remain vigilant, warn friends and family of this incident, and even recommend community members for their own safety not wear exposed gold chains while out walking. If anyone sees this suspect, they are asked to contact police at (510) 790-6800 and select option 3. Past incidents of such crimes in Fremont were reported here.
Monday, Sept. 23
  • A residential burglary occurred during the night on the 1100 block of Olive Avenue, with suspects entering via a doggie door and taking construction tools.
  • Two separate bicyclists hit by cars; no major injuries. A juvenile on a bike, with a helmet on, rode off the sidewalk into the path of a car leaving a stop sign at Sundale Drive and Piper Street. The bicyclist suffered minor scrapes and bruises.  In another incident, an adult riding a bike in the wrong direction on the sidewalk, with no helmet, rode in front of a car making a right turn onto Liberty Street from Walnut Plaza. Minor scrapes and bruises in that case, as well.
  • Two suspects arrested for ramming patrol car have extensive criminal history. Theodore Baca, 41, of Hayward and Ramon Rocha, 24, of Fremont, allegedly injured two Hayward police officers during a chase last week. Story here.
Sunday, Sept. 22
  • Remote-area resident hangs on to burglar until police arrive ... which took a long time. Residents at a home on top of Morrison Canyon called at 9:30 p.m. reporting that they just arrived home, saw it ransacked, and then realized the burglary suspect was still inside -- and they were holding him down while calling 911. While on the line with dispatch, the suspect broke free and another struggle ensued. East Bay Regional Parks  and numerous officers responded, but it took more than 10 minutes to get to the home which was a remote road. Even then, officers had to use bolt cutters to get into the gated property once they were able to locate it.  But once on scene -- they found the suspect still being held down by the victims. The suspect was combative and placed in a WRAP.
Saturday, Sept. 21
  • Man tries ditching his stash when he sees cop. Three men were walking at 10:50 p.m. near Adams and Roberts avenues when they saw police and one took off running while wearing a black backpack. When the officer circled and stopped to speak to the men, the runner was back with the group but without the backpack. Officers later find it in the bushes,  along with a cigarette package containing crystal methamphetamine. The male, 34, is arrested for alleged possession of a controlled substance.
Friday, Sept. 20
  • Deaf males made fun of and assault ensued at BART. Story here. The  BART case number is 1309-3421, and those with any information should reference that and contact on-duty Watch Commander at (510) 464-7020.
  • Lost dogs reunited with owner. The owner said she dropped the small dogs’ leashes after being scared by a large dog, allowing her dogs to run away. Story here.
Thursday, Sept. 19
  • Big ol' bar brawl. At 1:35 a.m., a motorist passing The Mojo Lounge reported 30 people, men, woman and security, fighting. The bartender said staff had kicked out all patrons, and they were fighting in front of the establishment on Peralta Boulevard. Half of the patrol shift was needed to clear the bar and surrounding parking lots of churches and the Train Depot due to the large crowd. One person needed medical treatment for a head wound, so fire/rescue workers were called. In the end, no one wanted to be a "victim" or prosecute.
  • Hayward girl's gunshot wound mistaken by family for menstruation. A doctor confirmed the wound was small and could have easily been overlooked if the parents had thought the girl was starting her period, police said. Details.
  • Big-rig overturns, spills 23 tons of rocks, 20 gallons of diesel on I-680 ramp. Story here.
