Police Log: Illegal Car Show with Pit Bulls; Girls' Night Out Not So Good

UPS driver confronts package thief, and more from Nov. 7 to 13.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Nov. 7 and 13 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

Wednesday, Nov. 13

  • Police seek female suspect in multiple bank robberies. A Hispanic or Pacific Islander woman in her 30s who recently robbed two banks in Menlo Park may have also hit a bank in Fremont, authorities said. Story here.
  • This alleged package thief was busted by UPS driver. At 4:25 p.m., a UPS worker reported seeing a man steal a newly delivered package, and when confronted, the suspect ran into a house on the 3300 block of Great Salt Lake Drive.  A neighbor said that earlier the man was trying to get into vehicles on another street. While officers were on their way, another person from inside the house came out and returned the package to the UPS employee.  Officers arrived, determined a robbery occurred and arrested the 22-year- old male.
Tuesday, Nov. 12Monday, Nov. 11
  • Grand theft suspect gives up his stash. As police followed up on grand theft of two bicycles from Target Nov. 8, they identified a Hayward male, 40, as a person rummaging through vehicles in front of Jack’s restaurant that day. (On Nov. 10, the same man was arrested for carrying a knife into Safeway.) Officers found the man and after an interview, the suspect took police to his stash of stolen items, including City of Fremont property. He was arrested for grand theft, receiving known stolen property and probation violation.
  • Loaded gun, drugs in wanted woman's car. A transient woman, 22, sleeping in her vehicle parked at Motel 6 (North) on Fremont Boulevard, had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for prostitution and was arrested. She consented to a search of her car and police turned up small amounts of cocaine powder and crack cocaine, marijuana, evidence of drug sales and a 357 revolver  -- cocked and loaded -- under the passenger seat. More charges were added.
Sunday, Nov. 10
  • A drunk with a knife walks into a supermarket.  Around midnight, a 40-year-old Hayward man entered Safeway at the Hub carrying a 10-inch kitchen knife. Police located the male walking near Trader Joe's. The subject attempted to run from police but was too intoxicated, didn’t get far and was arrested.
  • Female attempts extortion with lie about rape. At 1:10 a.m., a 36-year-old woman texted her boyfriend claiming she was being held against her will in Martinez by her father, adding that her father was going to rape her unless the boyfriend sent money. An officer tracked the female to Motel 6 (South), where she confirmed she was safe and admitted she lied for the money.
Saturday, Nov. 9
  • Chaos and cocaine at Saddle Rack. The Saddle Rack called at 1 a.m. reporting a fight involving about 30 males in the rear emergency lane outside the business. Police ended the fighting, and arrested one suspect, a 24-year-old Hayward man, for possession of cocaine. Another, 25, was arrested for being drunk in public.
  • And still at Saddle Rack ...  At 2:15 a.m., an officer took a report of a missing 42-year-old female. Six women from Santa Clara went to the Rack for a night out, but two felt sick and suspected someone may have slipped something into their drinks. And now another member of the group was missing. After conducting an extensive search, the missing female returned to the club. She claimed she could not remember anything about how she left the Saddle Rack, however, insisted she was not harmed.  Her male companion was detained, questioned and released. The women were referred to testing, and the incident documented.
  • Stick-up at Arco. A black male, 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 10 inches, 180 pounds and wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans, black gloves, and black shoes with white soles used a handgun to rob the Arco gas station at Stevenson Boulevard and Blacow Road.
Friday, Nov. 8
  • An impromptu -- and illegal -- "car show" brought hundreds of vehicles and carloads of people to the In-n-Out and Costco parking lots between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Police said it was by far the largest such gathering seen in some time. Officers and five California Highway Patrol units handled numerous car stops, citations, tows and tickets. The "enthusiasts" included some with obvious gang affiliations -- and pit-bulls in tow. The department is attempting to locate the "organizer" to mention that a permit is needed for a large gathering.
  • Suicide stand-off on High Street. A 32-year-old woman was screaming and threatening to jump from a second-story window at 5:25 p.m. at The Woods Apartments on High Street. Trained negotiators arrived and for two-and-a-half hours negotiated with the woman, who acted irrationally. Several plans were put forth, but ultimately the woman decided to jump, landing in soft landscaping mulch. She resisted, but was detained without injury and sent for a mental health evaluation.
Thursday, Nov. 7
  • Warrant arrest at community center. Officers, called to investigate a suspicious vehicle at Centerville Community Center, arrested the 20-year-old man in the car for an outstanding warrant.
