Police Log: 'Good Looking' Kidnapper; Reckless Driver in (Only) Socks and Boxers; Drivers Crash, Ditch Cars

Another necklace robber, mail theft, domestic violence and more from Sept. 5 to 11.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Sept. 5 and 11 as released by the Fremont Police Department. 

Wednesday, Sept. 11
  • 9/11 Ceremony. At 6:59 a.m. the Fremont Police and Fire departments held a joint 9/11 remembrance in front of the police station. Photos from the ceremony are on the department's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/FremontPoliceDepartment.
  • "A lot" to drink. Several citizens called at approximately 6 p.m. regarding a man down and drunk near Thornton Avenue and Dondero Way. Officers and paramedics responded, and found a 46-year-old male sitting on the curb, who told officers he had “a lot” to drink, and could not stand or walk, and did not think he could make it home. He was medically cleared and arrested.
  • Long, dangerous drive by nearly naked man.  A 39-year-old man was arrested for allegedly driving recklessly on Fremont streets and freeways after citizens first spotted him dancing around his car and taking off his clothes at 1:20 a.m. at the Mission Pass Shell station. He drove off from there heading southbound in northbound lanes, witnesses told police. An officer stopped at Technology Drive and Automall Parkway saw the motorist approaching at speeds up to 100 mph. The officer attempted to catch up to the car, which was swerving and nearly collided with the  median and another vehicle before continuing onto northbound I-880. The driver used the right shoulder of the freeway and sped by another patrol car. California Highway Patrol, meanwhile, was notified. The driver finally exited at Thornton Avenue, then continued to run red lights at speeds of 100 mph, swerving between north and south lanes. The driver finally pulled into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints parking lot on Decoto Road and stopped. He was reportedly compliant as he was taken into custody  -- wearing only boxer shorts and socks. 
  • Man passes away at motel. Cleaners at Motel 6 North reported finding a man deceased in a room at about 1 p.m. Nothing suspicious was located. The coroner responded and took custody of the decedent.

Tuesday, Sept. 10
  • Mail theft at Crandallwood apartments. At approximately 4:30 a.m., a citizen reported hearing a loud noise and seeing a Hispanic man in his 20s and a Hispanic female in her 20s stealing mail from an apartment complex mail center. Suspects were last seen in a sedan headed eastbound on Crandallwood Drive.
  • Another necklace grab. A woman reported a strong-arm robbery at 3:30 p.m., saying she was walking on the north sidewalk of Pennsylvania Avenue near Hastings Street when a thin, black male in his 30s, wearing prescription glasses, a grey t-shirt and denim shorts, grabbed her necklace, struggled with her and fled north on Hastings. Officers are looking for possible video surveillance in the area.  The female victim sustained minor scrapes and scratches. Similar necklace robberies were reported Aug. 25, Aug. 10, Aug. 6 and July 25.
  • Fence afire. A caller at 12:15 a.m. reported seeing a man in dark clothing and carrying a dark backpack set a residential fence on fire on the 39400 block of Wilford Street. Officers were unable to locate the suspect.
  • Copper theft attempt. Police were called at 5:45 a.m. to Brookvale Center after a suspicious man on the roof was seen talking to another male on the ground. When officers arrived and spoke to the man on the ground, a transient, 35, the other fled. The two were in the process of stealing copper from the roof top and caused $10,000 of PG&E damages in the process. The suspect detained was arrested for felony vandalism and possession of a controlled substance. The second man was not located. 

Monday, Sept. 9
  • Injury collision and felony hit-and-run. A driver and passenger of a 2013 Mustang fled after colliding with a motorcycle and severely injuring the cyclist at 1:40 a.m. on westbound Decoto Road east of I-880. The motorcyclist, a 49-year-old male, was transported to a trauma center with major injuries. The two suspects fled on foot leaving the Mustang behind and have not been located. 
  • Robbery and kidnapping reported on Mohave. A woman called police at 6:30 p.m. saying  she was on Mohave Common  when a man entered her vehicle, pointed a gun at her and ordered her to drive. The suspect told the woman that his friend had been shot and he was trying to leave the area. She drove a short distance when the suspect took her purse, removed her driver’s license, and fled on foot. He was described as South Asian Indian, 5’9” with a thin build, wearing a gray beanie hat, gray T-shirt, red basketball shorts, and was “good looking” with a scruffy beard.

Sunday, Sept. 8
  • Suspect sought for stolen vehicle, hit-and-run, lots of pot. An officer attempted to stop a vehicle speeding recklessly on Paseo Padre Parkway near Fremont Boulevard, however the driver refused to stop and eventually crashed at Paseo and Isherwood Way. The driver, the sole occupant of the car, fled the accident scene on foot and jumped a fence into the backyard of an Isherwood residence. Additional units and K-9 officers responded. The abandoned vehicle, stolen from Fremont, contained large amounts of marijuana. Additional units, K-9 officers and a CHP helicopter conducted yard-to-yard searches, but the suspect was not located. He was described as a white adult, 5’9” and wearing a grey shirt and brown shorts. 
  • Warrant arrest of suspected annoyer/molester. A 75-year-old Fremont man, who reportedly earlier this year tried enticing a juvenile female, was arrested for his "annoying/molesting children" warrant.  
  • Domestic battery and kidnapping. Citizens reported a possible kidnapping in northern Fremont after seeing a man physically restraining a female and driving off with her. Officers located the victim and determined this to be a case of domestic battery. The suspect had argued with his girlfriend in a car and refused to allow her to exit by physically restraining her. After a brief struggle, the victim broke free and got out of the car after it was involved in a collision. The man was arrested at his home for alleged domestic violence, kidnapping and other charges.

Saturday, Sept. 7
  • No love for roomie. A woman was arrested for suspected assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, terrorist threats and vandalism in north Fremont after becoming infuriated and attacking her roommate and smashing a computer with a hammer. They met three months ago at a bar and only were living together for a couple months. 
  • Stolen human remains found.  A citizen in Creekside Village called police after finding what appeared to be human ashes in a box labeled with the decedent’s name, date of death and crematorium used. Officers tracked the ashes and found they were stolen during an auto burglary then apparently discarded by the suspect(s). The remains were returned to the decedent's family. 
Friday, Sept. 6
  • Beware the Ghost House. Several transients created a disturbance near the Ghost House at the Hub.  One man was arrested for public intoxication. Officers were asked to up patrols around the Ghost House in upcoming weeks. 
  • Caretaker charged with committing sex acts on elderly patient in nursing facility. Story here.
Thursday, Sept. 5
  • Big-rig fire burns driver, sparks grass fire on I-680. Story here.
  • Suicidal threats from guard.  A Taser-armed, on-duty security guard at a business on Nobel Drive was detained without incident and taken for a psychiatric evaluation after a concerned friend called police regarding his threats of suicide. 
  • Safeway arrest. A 59-year-old man was arrested as he ran down Union Street after allegedly stealing toiletries from Safeway in Irvington.  Multiple calls from Safeway regarding the same man were recorded in recent days.  
  • Clerk punched for beef jerky. A petty theft of beef jerky at the Chapel Way and Washington Boulevard 7-Eleven escalated into a robbery when the suspect reportedly punched the clerk before fleeing the store.
