Police Log: Burglar on Video Busted; Masked Man with Gun Follows Woman at Motel

Runaway parade horse, break-ins, stolen cars and more Nov. 27 to Dec. 4.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Nov. 27 and Dec. 4 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

Wednesday, Dec. 4
  • Residential burglary suspect caught on camera is arrested less than 24 hours after video is released. More than a dozen tips came in following a Saturday break-in leading to the arrest of Richard Andres Banuelos, 28, a Fremont transient at 1:30 p.m. at the Fremont Islander Motel. Original story here; video taken down.
  • Four auto thefts reported in the north end of town: at 7 a.m. a two-door, beige 1991 Acura Integra, CA license 6WLD357, stolen overnight from Countrywood Apartments; 8:10 a.m. on Vincente Street of a 1993 Nissan Altima (later found undamaged in a Newark Boulevard parking lot); on Lorenzo Terrace of a red 2006 four-door Saturn Vue, license  5WDX147; and on the 3800 block of Darwin Drive, a maroon 1995 Nissan Sentra four-door stolen overnight from the front of a residence.
  • Businessman watches burglary attempt unfold via security cam. A man called police at 5 a.m. from inside his laptop-repair shop on Fremont Boulevard as he watched on closed-circuit television as a male was using an object to break through locked doors to his business. The owner passed along the live activity to police, and arriving officers stopped a white pick-up leaving the address. The truck was driven by a 23-year-old woman from San Jose. Her passenger was a bloodied San Jose man, 35, on parole for burglary. The pair and their truck matched the description of suspects in another break-in on Blacow Road, and they could be involved in additional cases.
Tuesday, Dec. 3
  • Burglar nabbed. A 22-year-old Fremont man was arrested after he was caught fleeing a house on Firth Court. The Firth resident called police after hearing a knock at the front door, followed by someone attempting to open an interior garage door. The suspect’s clothing and shoe prints linked him to the crime.
  • Ex throws rocksA San Jose woman, 33, was arrested at 9:10 p.m. after her ex-boyfriend reported she was screaming, pounding and kicking his door, and throwing rocks at his window at Glenview Apartments. The woman attempted to run and jump a wall when police arrived. She also reportedly tampered with a fire alarm at the complex.
Monday, Dec. 2
  • A home burglary was called in at 12:40 p.m. on Morada Court by a neighbor who saw two men run from a house, get into a red Prius and drive off. An alarm from the home sounded, as well. However, police were unable to locate the suspects, described as: Hispanic male, early 30s, 5 feet 6 inches with short black hair and green sweater; and Hispanic male, 30s, 5 feet 6 inches with curly black hair. No description was available for the driver of the red, newer model Toyota Prius.
  • And that red, getaway Prius may be involved in another break-in reported 6:30 p.m. along Laurel Canyon Way. Burglars entered a side gate and broke a lock on a back window to gain entry. Witnesses report a red Prius in the area between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., with the male driver described as a South Asian Indian adult.
Sunday, Dec. 1
  • Brazen thief steals car keys from motel room -- and then steals the car. A man at 9:50 a.m. reported his 2001 light green Lexus GS300, license 4NIV723, stolen from the rear lot of Motel 6 (South). Video surveillance showed the suspected thief entering the victim's room and taking keys to the Lexus, as well as keys to a Honda Accord, along with a laptop, leather jacket and iPod. The suspect, a Hispanic or white male, 18 to 25, wore a white and red hat with blue lettering, a dark sport coat with white sleeves, jeans and white shoes.
  • Another auto theft logged at 11:45 a.m. from a parking lot on the 4200 block of Bay Street involved a four-door, black 1994 Honda Accord, license 6JSX624, stolen between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Saturday, Nov. 30
  • Domestic offender eludes cops, finally arrested. A family member called police after a 29-year-old male violated a restraining order and showed up at his ex-girlfriend’s house and threatened her. The subject also has an active felony kidnapping/domestic violence warrant involving the same female victim. The victim fled in her vehicle with her ex following on his motorcycle. Police spotted him near Fremont Boulevard and Mattos Drive, but he ignored officers, sped off and was last seen near the Department of Motor Vehicles on Central Avenue. He was found and arrested Tuesday in Union City. Story here.
Friday, Nov. 29
  • Elderly woman on floor for days. A family member asked police to check on an 80-year-old relative who lives alone on Locke Avenue and was not heard from in four days. Officers found the woman lying on the floor, and she was taken to a local hospital.
  • Another car gone. At 9 a.m. near Mowry Avenue and Paseo Padre Parkway, a citizen flagged down officers to report his vehicle -- a four-door, silver 1996 Honda Accord, license 3NNA513 -- was stolen overnight from the 34100 block of Cartwright Place
  • Curfew-violating shelter resident fabricates robbery, kidnap. A male, 54, called from a BART pay phone at 4:30 a.m. telling police he was robbed and kidnapped at gunpoint and then left, along with kidnappers' vehicle, at the HUB. Officers could not locate any vehicle. And after extensive interviewing, the man cracked and admitted he made up the story after spending his money on a “date” and returning to the local shelter after hours. He was arrested for making a false police report.
  • Runaway parade horse. Officers working the Niles Tree Lighting and Parade reported no problems aside from a horse that ran from the staging area back to its barn near Quarry Lakes. On its way home, the horse crashed into and damaged a pickup truck.
Thursday, Nov. 28
  • DUI arrest. A concerned citizen reported a possible drunken driver on Fremont and Grimmer boulevards, Police spotted and arrested the erratic -- and intoxicated -- driver, a Union City male, 57.
  • Masked man with gun knocks on motel door. A female at Motel 6 (North) called 911 at 5:07 a.m. after a male wearing a dark sweatshirt, black pants, white mask  -- and armed with a handgun -- followed her to her room and knocked on her door. Responding officers saw a male matching the description enter another room and quickly surrounded the property. The suspect and his associates eventually came out of the room and gave officers consent to search it. Inside, police found a mask and hooded sweatshirt, plus a semi-auto handgun in the bathroom toilet tank, and a mask and hooded sweatshirt. The 17-year-old suspect was arrested and taken to Juvenile Hall.
