Police Log: School Snack Shack Burns; Break-In by Suspects in Surgical Masks

New Year's Eve fatality, church caretaker mistaken for burglar, and more from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

Wednesday, Jan. 1

  • A theft arrest was made at Fry's Electronics parking lot of an adult male, who was also found in possession of drugs and paraphernalia.
  • Washington eatery break-insMission Jarrito Restaurant and Mission Pizza & Pub on Washington Boulevard were burglarized at 4:25 a.m. Police contacted and took into custody two suspects, who were found in front of the businesses. 
Tuesday, Dec. 31
  • Burglary arrest at market.  A 25-year-old woman fought with security and officers at Whole Foods Market, and was arrested for alleged burglary and a no-bail burglary warrant from Santa Clara County. 
  • Auto thefts galore. Vehicles were reported stolen from: the 600 block of  Mowry Avenue; on 5900 Automall Parkway; on 39100 block of Sundale Drive; along the 5500 block of Simm Court; on 5700 block of Cushing Parkway.
Monday, Dec. 30
  • A disoriented elderly man, found at Ardenwood Elementary School, told police that he was at the park since the previous day and did not know how to get home. An officer found his residence nearby, and the man’s wife said he had only been gone a few hours. He was taken to a local hospital for a mental-health evaluation. 
  • Burglarized as they slept. A residential burglary was reported on Southwycke Terrace by a victim who reportedly woke up and discovered the back slider unlocked, the closet ransacked and a wallet missing. 
  • Commercial burglary at Novariant Inc., on the 45000 block of Northport Loop, was called in by an individual who interrupted a man who had just broken a window and entered the building. The suspect, last seen running out the backdoor, was described as Hispanic, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and wearing a mask.   
  • A stripped and stolen '98 Chevy Camero was abandoned at King Avenue and Terrace Drive. The car was stolen from a Niles auto repair shop.
  • Commercial burglary at Zyomex, on the 6500 block of Dumbarton Circle, was reported by a janitor who called police after interrupting two suspects who had just broken a window and entered the building.  Prior to securing herself in an interior office, she saw the two suspects run back toward the broken window. The two suspects were described as black males, approximately 20 years old, wearing surgical masks. 
Sunday, Dec. 29
  • Motel squatter. Staff at Extended Stay America on Farwell Place called police regarding an unknown man inside a vacant hotel room. Officers responded, and the man was arrested for an outstanding warrant.
  • Several shell casings and women's clothing were found by a citizen on the 4000 block of Calypso Trail. The casings appeared to be rifle rounds. 
Saturday, Dec. 28
  • Police respond when church caretaker trips alarm. Officers responded to a possible burglary at  Calvary Baptist Church, on Roberts Avenue, after the alarm company heard audio of a loud crashing after the alarm sounded. K9 Officer Kalimero searched the premises and "indicated" a subject behind a closed door. The subject was detained, and turned out to be the church caretaker, who accidently set off the alarm.
  • Kids alone; mother arrested. Officers were called by a father who said he discovered his four children, all under 10 years old, alone at their residence.  The children’s father said he had been waiting approximately 45 minutes for the mother to return, then called police. An officer arrived and stayed about 30 to 45 minutes making multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact the mother. The 42-year-old woman finally arrived home, claimed she drove to the store and was gone a short time, and was arrested for child endangerment. The children were released to their father. 
  • Drunk man down in drive-through. An Oak Pointe Apartments resident on Irvington Avenue reported at 4 a.m. that an unknown man was at her door attempting to get inside. He eventually left, and police found him laying in the Jack in the Box drive-through. The male, 21, said he was drunk and trying to find a girl he knew, and was arrested for public intoxication.
Friday, Dec. 27
  • DUI collision. At 3:20 a.m., officers handled a collision at Blacow Road and Central Avenue, where eyewitnesses reported seeing a silver Honda -- “blacked out”  -- traveling north on Blacow at about 50 mph when it ran a red light, struck a green Mustang and drove through a light pole.  The driver then continued north in the southbound lane and struck two parked vehicles. The driver, a Fremont man, 26, was arrested for felony drunk driving.  
Thursday, Dec. 26
  • A burglary in-progress at Countrywood Apartments on Thornton Avenue was reported by a resident who said two males were breaking into his neighbor’s apartment. Both suspects fled on foot and were not located. They were described as: a black male, approximately 18, dressed in a grey hoodie and wearing a backpack; and a black male, about 18, 6 feet 1 inch and wearing a grey shirt and basketball shorts.  
  • Armed robbery was reported at 4:40 p.m. by a clerk at Quick Stop, Mowry Avenue at Farwell Drive, who said she was robbed at gun point by a black male, 5 feet 9 inches with a heavy build. The entire cash drawer of the register was taken. Responding units flooded the area but the suspect was not located.
