Police Log: Kids Ignored as Parents Party; Intruders Hit Stores, Homes, Storage Units

Suspected DUI fatality, a suicide averted and more from Oct. 24 to 30.

 The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Oct. 24 and 30 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

Wednesday, Oct. 30

  • Silver VW flasher. Police are investigating reports of indecent exposure at Fremont Boulevard and Blacow Road by a male in a silver VW sedan. 
  • Attempted hit-and-run. Witnesses detained an 84-year-old motorist whom they say ran a red light and struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk at Central Avenue and Dusterberry Way. The witnesses said the driver tried to leave the scene. The man was arrested for attempted felony hit-and-run. The passenger was transported to a trauma center for non life-threatening injuries.
  • Child endangerment times three. Officers and Fremont Fire Department were called to a home for a woman reportedly in need of medical aid. Upon arrival, they found the female had attempted to harm herself, her husband was under the influence and disruptive, and they were both apparently doing drugs and drinking. Their three kids, ages 5, 9 and 10, were left to fend for themselves.  The male, 31, was arrested; the female will face a complaint filed against her with the District Attorney as she was admitted to the hospital.

Tuesday, Oct. 29
  • Residential burglary was reported on the 5300 block of Shamrock Common. Suspects at 3 a.m. entered the garage through an open overhead garage door, and, once inside, ransacked two unlocked vehicles stealing several electronic items.
  • Burglary at apartment storage units. At an apartment complex on the 43500 block of Grimmer Boulevard at  9:50 a.m., police were called to investigate a burglary of two storage rooms. The break-in occurred sometime overnight from 4 p.m. to Tuesday morning, when intruders gained access through a small window on the second floor and pried open two storage doors. The losses were not yet tabulated.
  • Front door open, dog outside -- another burglary. A resident on the 4800 block of Paseo Padre Parkway called police when after she returned home and found her front door open and her dog outside. No one was inside, however the house had been burglarized sometime during the day. The family room and master bedroom were ransacked and electronics were disheveled. Losses are still being determined. 
Monday, Oct. 28
  • Deceased person at motel. A 29-year-old male was found deceased inside a room at the Mission Peak Lodge. The coroner arrived at 4:20 p.m. and took custody of the body.  
  • Home break-in. A burglary was reported at noon from a resident on the 4300 block of Pecos Avenue. The break-in occurred sometime that morning.

Sunday, Oct. 27
  • Two commercial burglaries with rocks thrown. In one incident on the 37500 block of Dusterberry Avenue, a white male with a goatee, wearing a black hoodie, possibly driving a newer VW Passat, smashed the front glass door of the business with a large paver stone.  The loss was the cash register drawer. In the second case on the 3600 block of Thornton Avenue, unknown suspect(s) threw a rock through the front window to gain entry into the business. This time, the loss was the entire cash register.
Saturday, Oct. 26
  • Vicious dog attacks two, police. Officers responded to the 38500 block of Royal Ann Common after a large pit bull attacked a juvenile and a male adult. The pit bull chased after the juvenile and bit his backpack.  Officers were also attacked by the dog as they attempted to place a pole snare on it. Officers discharged a Taser and fired two shots towards the dog, which returned to its backyard. After the owner arrived, the pit bull was transported to the animal shelter for safekeeping and follow-up by Animal Control Officers.

Friday, Oct. 25
  • Lawsuit alleges Fremont apartment discriminated against families with children. Details.
  • Female arrested for swiping phone from store. A woman stole a cell phone off a display wall at the T-Mobile store at the Fremont Hub Shopping Center and fled in a gold Pontiac with a towel covering the license plate. Police found the woman driving on Blacow Road near Thornton and  followed her onto southbound I-880 until marked units pulled her over. She was identified and arrested, and it was discovered she was also wanted by another agency for a similar crime. 
  • Possible attempted robbery at Ross. An employee at the Ross store on Mission Boulevard in Warm Springs called police reporting an unknown man was outside and knocking on the front door before it opened. Police located the male nearby and found a replica firearm in his pocket.  In the parking lot was his vehicle, which was a car stolen out of Fremont and had another replica firearm in the trunk. Police believe the man intended to rob Ross at gunpoint, and was arrested.
Thursday, Oct. 24
  • Arrest for Washington High fight. A large fight broke out at Washington High School with one juvenile student knocked unconscious. The suspect was booked into Juvenile Hall for felony battery.
