Police Log: Assault with Deadly Mug; Plus, Man Returns Loaner Car -- Stripped!

Bomb scare on Union, homicide and more from April 4 to 10.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont April 4 to 10 as released by the Fremont Police Department.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10

  • He thought they wouldn't notice? A Gilroy man, 30, was arrested at a Cushing Parkway auto dealership for suspected grand theft after returning his loaner vehicle with its insides totally stripped and replaced with parts from other cars. The suspect reportedly removed -- and in some cases replaced -- the seats, door panels, a portion of the passenger side dash including the airbag, plastic molding around the front doors, rear speakers, spare tire, jack kit, rear plastic molding, screws from the engine compartment cover and an air-intake hose. The damage was estimated at $15,000 to $25,000.  
  • Deadly mug. A Fremont man, 27, was arrested for suspected assault with a deadly weapon after a family member reported to police he attacked her with a mug.

TUESDAY, APRIL 9

  • Shoplifters busted. A female trio of suspected shoplifters were arrested at Kohl's after store security spotted them concealing merchandise. Two were cited for theft, but the third, a 25- year-old, was booked for an additional $5,000 burglary warrant out of Sonoma County.

MONDAY, APRIL 8

  • Fast foul play. A vehicle had four tires slashed, its windshield shattered and gas tank tampered with -- in less than five minutes after being parked in front of a home on the 4900 block of Everglades Park Drive. 
  • Like low-down dogs. Residents reported burglars used a rear doggie-door to break into their Roberts Avenue home and swipe a laptop, two cameras and jewelry. The break-in occurred April 7 between 7:45 a.m. and 5 p.m. A "doggie-door break-in" also was logged last month in Newark. Story here.  
  • Residential burglary foiled. A break-in attempt at a home on the 4100 block of Hansen Avenue was interrupted by a resident who called police after seeing a man trying to enter through a rear window. 
  • Cabbie stiffed; penniless rider arrested. An intoxicated 46-year-old homeless man was arrested at 1:20 a.m. on Fremont Boulevard and Thornton Avenue after taking a $130 cab ride with no money to pay the tab.

SUNDAY, APRIL 7

  • Drunk at Hub, at Bowl, behind the wheel. Alcohol-related arrests included: a 59-year-old man for public intoxication at Cloverleaf Family Bowl; male, 60, for public intoxication at Fremont Hub Shopping Center; and a man, 22, for DUI after crashing his vehicle at the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Dentist break-in. A rock was used to smash a window at a dental office on the 2100 block of Mowry Avenue sometime between 5 p.m. Saturday and 6:50 p.m. Sunday. Reported losses included  computers, a network server, cash and toothbrushes.

SATURDAY, APRIL 6

  • Self-confessed, Target-loving serial crook.  A man arrested at the Hub's Target for suspected burglary, admitted to officers that he also stole from two other Target stores. He was booked for three counts of burglary.
  • Median drunk. A male, reportedly sitting in the center divide of Fremont Boulevard and Decoto Road yelling and throwing dirt at passers-by, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.

FRIDAY, APRIL 5

  • Man stabbed in head and arm ... for cell phone.  Story here.
  • The old returning-stolen-goods trick? A man and woman were arrested at Kohl’s after store security determined they were attempting to return stolen merchandise. While at Fremont Jail, the female let officers know she had a bindle of methamphetamine in her mouth, and was booked for burglary and possession of drugs. Her male accomplice's mouth was empty; he was booked for burglary.
  • Drunk driver topples light pole. A 40-year-old man was arrested for suspected DUI after his vehicle knocked down a light pole on Thornton Avenue and Oak Street. Clean-up of the scene and pole required a city crew and Republic Electric.

THURSDAY, APRIL 4

  • Woman assaulted by intruder. A woman on Spezia Terrace was upstairs cleaning a bathroom at 7 p.m. when she was grabbed from behind by a male intruder, who possibly entered the house through an open garage. who was described in his 30s, of medium height and weight, black hair, in a gray hooded sweatshirt.
  • Fremont man, 73, killed; daughter arrested. Story here.

  • Box with guns, cash, ammo taken at BART. Grand theft logged 7:25 p.m. at Fremont BART, when a man reported a utility box bolted into the bed of his 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck was stolen, along with its contents -- a 22. semi–automatic rifle, 12-gauge shotgun, tools, golf clubs, clothing, $3,600 cash, a sleeping bag, ammunition, and luggage. The theft occurred between 4:55 a.m. and 4:50 p.m. Anyone with info should call BART police at (510) 464-7020 and reference case 1304-0606.
