Police Log: 5-Year-Old Falls From Second Floor of Motel; 2,000 Weed Plants Seized

A summary of recent crimes reported in Fremont.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Feb. 21 and Feb. 27 as released by the Fremont Police Department. 

THURSDAY, FEB. 21

5-year-old falls from second floor of motel

A 5-year-old boy fell about 12 feet to the ground from the second floor of a room at the Islander Motel. The investigation revealed that the boy was playing on the bed and fell through an open window. He was not severely injured but was taken to the Children’s Hospital in Oakland as a precaution.

Several injured in multi-car crash caused by alleged drunken driver

An elderly woman was critically injured and pool chemicals spilled in a head-on crash caused by an alleged drunk driver. The crash was reported around 7 p.m. on Ardenwood Boulevard north of Paseo Padre Parkway. A 1995 Toyota pickup truck was driving the wrong way, traveling north in the southbound lanes, when he collided head-on with a 2002 Honda Odyssey minivan traveling south. The impact from the crash caused the Honda to collide with a big-rig also traveling south, as well as a 2004 Ford Explorer, while the Toyota rolled over and came to rest on its roof. The driver of the Toyota suffered injuries to his left arm and was taken with his passenger to Eden Medical Center. The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving. The driver and passengers of the Honda were also taken to the hospital. One of the passengers, a 76-year-old woman, was listed in critical condition.

FRIDAY, FEB. 22

2,000 marijuana plants found in Glenmoor Drive home

PG&E had gone to a building located in the 37500 block of Glenmoor Drive and found that power to the building had been bypassed. Police responded and observed a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside the building. About 2,000 marijuana plants were eventually located and seized. Two suspects found hiding inside the building were arrested in connection with the grow operation.

Stolen handgun recovered in disturbance at Ramirez Market

Officers responded to a disturbance involving a handgun at Ramirez Market where the owner and a customer had a dispute over a transaction. A handgun was reportedly used in a threatening manner but officers found there to be no threats made the gun. A handgun was present at the scene and determined to have been stolen in 1999.

Report of shots fired were fireworks

Officers responded to Stevenson Court on a report of a possible shooting. It turned out to be fireworks and drunk juveniles. 

Home burglary

A home was broken into on the 48100 block of Purpleleaf Street.

SATURDAY, FEB. 23

Woman dies after report of heartburn

Officers responded to the Pinebrook Apartments on a report of a person down. The husband said his 28-year-old wife was not breathing. Officers performed CPR until Fremont Fire Department arrived. The woman was taken to Washington Hospital and, after one and a half hours, was pronounced dead. The woman had been complaining of severe heart burn in recent weeks.

Stolen car

A gray 1998 Toyota 4Runner, license plate #2KSV571, was reported stolen from the 46800 block of Winema Common.

Check stolen from mailbox

A check was stolen from a woman’s mailbox on the 4300 block of Goldenrain Avenue and forged.

Four women arrested after stealing cosmetics from Safeway

Three women entered the Safeway in Warm Springs and stole a variety of female cosmetics. A security guard witnessed the theft as it was in progress and alerted police. The guard tried to detain the suspects but they fled on foot toward a waiting vehicle, a gold Toyota Camry that was being driven by a fourth woman. Two of the suspects made it to the car; the third was detained. The detained suspect pulled out pepper spray and assaulted the guard. Fremont police arrived and eventually detained all four suspects. Three were arrested on suspicion of burglary and the one who assaulted the security guard was arrested on suspicion of burglary. One of the suspects also had a felony warrant for fraud.

Home burglary

A home on Caliban Drive was burglarized between 4 and 8 p.m.

SUNDAY, FEB. 24

Pedestrian critically injured after being struck by car

A female pedestrian suffered major injuries when she was struck by a car at about 11:20 p.m. A burgundy 2000 Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound on Central Avenue just past Dusterberry Way when it hit the pedestrian, a 35-year-old Fremont woman, who appeared to be crossing Central Avenue in the southbound direction. When officers arrived at the scene they found the female pedestrian on the ground, breathing but unconscious. After finding no pulse, officers performed CPR on the woman until firefighters and paramedics arrived. The woman was then taken by ambulance to an area trauma center. The driver, a 48-year-old Union City woman, was not injured and alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor.

Sushi Tango burglarized

A window was smashed and cash was taken from the register at Sushi Tango, located on the 4100 block of Cushing Parkway.

MONDAY, FEB. 25

Rash of gang graffiti

Officers responded to the area of Central Avenue in Centerville on the report of gang graffiti. A majority of the graffiti was “VNF, X4, NSF and NORTE” in red lettering. The characters were approximately four-feet high each. It is believed to have been sprayed between 3 and 10 p.m.

Home burglaries

A home on the 42600 block of Fontainebleau Park Land was broken into between 5 p.m. on Sunday and 9:30 a.m. Monday. The rear sliding door was pried open and a laptop was taken.

Jewelry, a laptop and an iPad were stolen from a home on the 35000 block of Armour Way between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Entry was made via a sliding door.

Stolen car

A silver Ford Mustang license plate 5JYZ529 was stolen between 9 and 11:30 p.m. from Glendale Avenue.

TUESDAY, FEB. 26

Man who made threats to harm himself arrested

Hayward PD requested Fremont officers check on the welfare of a man who made threats to harm himself at a park in the City of Hayward. Hayward police believed that the man was currently at a residence on the 42000 block of Homewood St. and was possibly armed with a handgun. The man also had a $100,000 arrest warrant. Officers responded and surrounded the residence to check on the man. Officers located the man inside and he was detained and placed on a psychiatric hold.

Home burglaries

At approximately 10:45 a.m. a resident on the 5000 block of Turban Court called and reported that two men entered his residence. The victim ran out of the house and over to an adjacent school. The victim observed the suspects flee and get into a vehicle. Officers surrounded the house, and cleared it of suspects. A vehicle with a similar description was stopped leaving the area, but it was not the burglary suspects. One suspect was described a male about 5-foot-6 weighing 180 to 190 pounds and wearing a dark grey hooded sweatshirt and jeans. The car was described as an older red two-door vehicle with a silver or white faded bumper.

Officers were dispatched to a residential burglary that occurred on the 2300 block of Peralta Boulevard. The burglary occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Point of entry was a kitchen window and loss was laptops, digital camera, designer accessories and cash.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 27

Suspicious package brings out bomb squad

An unknown man drove into the rear lot of business on the 3500 block of W. Warren Avenue. The man got out of his vehicle and placed a package under the decking near a pond of water. He waved at employees then drove away. Officers responded, partially evacuated the building and called in the Alameda County bomb squad. The package was eventually determined to be harmless.

Forgery arrest

Officers responded to a call of a female trying to cash a fraudulent check at Citibank on the 39100 block of Fremont Boulevard. They arrived and detained a 23-year-old adult female. She was arrested on suspicion of forgery and burglary.

Man tries to break into ex-girlfriend’s home

A victim reported that her ex-boyfriend entered her backyard and was banging on her bedroom window. The call escalated into the suspect trying to break into the home. Units responded and found a 24-year-old male in the backyard. He was arrested on suspicion of prowling.
