Police Car Chase Ends With Suspect On Store Roof

Fremont police officers were sent on a vehicle pursuit that involved driving around roundabouts multiple times before eventually finding a suspect on a convenience store roof Tuesday night, a police spokesman said.

An officer attempted to stop a sedan that did not appear to have a front license plate on Eggers Drive near Kimbro Street around 11:40 p.m., Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

The car fled and police followed, and the vehicles went around a roundabout four times before the fleeing driver revved the engine and headed eastbound on Eggers in a westbound lane, Bosques said.

The driver, later identified as a 27-year-old Fremont man, continued driving in the wrong direction and going 50 mph in a 25 mph area, Bosques said. After running several red lights and turning onto Paseo Padre Parkway, the driver eventually made a U-turn near Peralta Boulevard and headed southbound in the southbound lanes of Paseo Padre Parkway after previously driving in the wrong direction, Bosques said.

More police units were called and the car was found abandoned in the 3700 block of Bright Common. A 24-year-old Fremont man who said he had been a passenger in the car was found shortly later near the Camden Quik Stop, located at 38000 Camden St., and arrested on suspicion of being under the influence and possessing a controlled substance, Bosques said.

The driver was eventually found on the roof of the convenience store. He surrendered and was brought down by a Fremont fire ladder where he was arrested on police evasion and drug possession charges, along with driving violations and on a previous drug-related warrant, Bosques said. The pair were both taken into custody.
