A man was hospitalized Tuesday night after being stabbed multiple times at a homeless encampment, police said.

Fremont police said officers responded to the area of Commerce Drive and Paseo Padre Parkway around 7:45 p.m. after the victim reported he had been stabbed by another man who frequents the homeless camp.

Fremont Police Spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said the victim was riding his bicycle near the area when the suspect, who he knew, approached him and demanded money.

The victim told the suspect he did not have money and the verbal argument turned physical, Bosques said.

The suspect then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim, she added.

Authorities arrived and found the victim "seriously bleeding" from multiple stab wounds, according to Bosques.

The suspect, a 45-year-old homeless man, was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail. A 6-inch blade was recovered from the scene, Bosques said.

The victim was taken to a local trauma center and was treated for major, but non-life treatening, injuries, Fremont police said.
