Update: Toddler Killed, Two Adults Injured in Crash

Candles are lit and flowers adorn a tree where a horrific crash claimed the life of a 3-year-old boy and critically injured two adults in Fremont Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred at about 12:50 p.m. on Paseo Padre Parkway between Chadbourne Drive and Dorne Place.

A car appeared to have been speeding -- up to 100 miles per hour, according to witnesses -- and went off the roadway, striking a tree and causing the vehicle to split in half, police spokesman Geneva Bosques said.

The child was restrained in the back seat but was ejected when the car split in half, Bosques said. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

The 34-year-old male driver of the car was also ejected and suffered major injuries, while a 31-year-old female in the front passenger seat was critically injured and was extricated from the car by firefighters, Bosques said.

Both adults were taken to local trauma center where they are undergoing treatment, she said.

Police remained at the scene for several hours, with Paseo Padre Parkway closed in both directions for seven hours.

The investigation is still ongoing, police said Wednesday.
