An anonymous private benefactor has donated $50,000 for a gun buyback event for residents in Fremont, Newark, and Union City hosted by Fremont police next weekend.
The event will take place at 10 a.m. on March 16 at the Fremont Fire Department Training Facility at 7200 Stevenson Blvd.
Firearms in working condition and capable of firing a round via center or rim fire cartridge will be exchanged for cash, according to Fremont police.
Police said there will be a maximum payout of 10 guns per vehicle and the anonymous donation of $50,000 will be distributed in exchange for firearms on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Shotguns, semi-automatic .22 rifles and non-semi-automatic rifles, such as bolt action, pump action, break front, lever action rifles will be exchanged for $100.
Handguns and semi-automatic center fire rifles will be exchanged for $200.
All semi-automatic rifles or pistols in an assault weapon configuration, as determined by the gun buyback staff, will be exchanged for $300.
Police said all transactions are anonymous.
While proof or residency in one of the three cities is required, police said that information would not be recorded and that the event would be on a no-questions-asked basis.
Once the allotted funds have been depleted, firearms will continue to be accepted for destruction. Police said that vouchers would not be distributed.
Participants are asked to secure their unloaded firearms, with the action open if possible, in the trunk or cargo area of their vehicle.
No walk-ups will be allowed, police said.
Participants will not need to handle the firearm or exit their vehicle during the transaction, according to police.
