Crime Log: Drunk Driver Leads Chase to San Francisco; Bicyclist Killed in Accident

A summary of recent crimes reported in Fremont.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Jan. 18 and Jan. 23 as released by the Fremont Police Department. 

FRIDAY, JAN. 18

Islander Motel patron attacked by another tenant

A guest at the Islander Motel was assaulted by another tenant after exchanging words with him. The assailant followed the victim after they exchanged words and hit him in the back of the head with an object wrapped in a shirt or beanie. The victim required multiple staples for the head injury.

Woman robbed at gunpoint at Sycamore Commons Apartments

A woman walking to her home at the Sycamore Commons Apartments was robbed of her iPhone at gunpoint at around 8 p.m. The woman was so shook up from the robbery that she didn’t report it until two hours later. 

Home burglary

A Hoyt Street home was broken into sometime after 9 a.m.

SATURDAY, JAN. 19

Clerk assaulted after possible theft at Safeway

A clerk at the Safeway on the 46000 block of Mission Boulevard was pushed in the parking lot by a group of suspects that were accused of stealing from the store. The suspects drove off in a newer model gold four-door Lincoln.

Two arrested after punching security guard

Officers responded to the Saddle Rack bar and nightclub after receiving a report of a security guard being punched in the mouth. Two men were eventually arrested.

Man arrested for being drunk in public

Later this night, officers responded to Mojo Lounge on a report of a man throwing glass in the street and causing a disturbance. The man had been kicked out of the bar for being too drunk. The man, a 26-year-old Union City resident, was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication.

SUNDAY, JAN. 20

Joyriders busted with stolen car

A man was arrested and a teen cited after being found with a stolen car near Thornton Avenue and Dutra Way. An officer spotted the vehicle, which appeared suspicious and had its passenger door open. The officer ran the plate and discovered that it was stolen out of Oakland. The officer turned back and contacted three people standing next to the car. A 17-year-old girl admitted that she drove the car from Oakland to Fremont. She was cited and released to her mother. Another one of the subjects had a warrant for his arrest and was taken to jail.

Two arrested after trying to evade officers

An officer driving down Niles Boulevard spotted a suspicious vehicle. When the officer tried to stop the car and was exiting the patrol car, the driver sped off and ran several stop signs down 2nd Street. When the suspect reached the dead-end at Alameda Creek, he made a run for it. The suspect, a 23-year-old Fremont resident with several felony warrants, was eventually spotted hiding in the bushes. He was found with meth on his person and arrested for his warrants and on suspicion of drug possession. A 19-year-old male passenger from Lathrop was also found to be under the influence of drugs and arrested. Officers also located several items that may be related to home burglaries.

Driver crashes into tree

A 20-year-old Union City man sustained critical injuries after crashing into a tree near Ardenwood Boulevard and Kaiser Drive. The man was speeding in a customized Toyota Celica southbound on Ardenwood Boulevard when he lost control of the car. He was taken to a local hospital with major injuries. 

Car stolen in home burglary

A home on the 100 block of Pontiac Way was broken into while the homeowners were away for the weekend. The residents found one of their vehicles was stolen, but it was later located that night in San Jose.

Minor drives drunk, crashes car

A 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence after crashing his car near the area of Eggers Drive and Glenview Road.

MONDAY, JAN. 21

Bicyclist killed in collision with vehicle

A 57-year-old bicyclist was killed after colliding with a car at around 7:05 a.m. near Paseo Padre Parkway and Isherwood Way. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle stopped and was cooperative with the investigation.

Armed robbery at liquor store

A masked gunman entered the 7 Hill Food and Liquor, located at 36440 Fremont Blvd., at about 6:25 p.m. and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect was described as a black male about 21 to 23 years old wearing a ski mask, black jeans, black shoes and a black hoodie.

Residential burglaries 

A home was broken into on the 3200 block of Grand Lake Drive at around 3:40 p.m. Suspects entered the home by kicking a side door to the garage. They stole laptops, jewelry, cash, gift cards and other items.

Officers responded to a burglary on the 36400 block of Perkins Street at around 5:30 p.m. The suspects entered through a window.

Residents on the 4200 block of Nerissa Circle returned home after being gone for two days to find their home burglarized. Suspects smashed a dining room window and made off with cash and jewelry.

TUESDAY, JAN. 22

Two arrested for obstructing investigation

Fremont police responded to a home on Canfield Drive after receiving a report of a fireman from an outside agency being held against his will inside the home. Officers arrived at the home around 12:10 p.m. and found a 24-year-old woman who tried to hide from officers. She was eventually arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance. As officers were searching the house, they encountered a 19-year-old male who tried to prevent them from searching the home. He was arrested on suspicion of obstructing an investigation. No hostages were located in the home.

Drunk driver leads officers on chase to San Francisco

A man led officers on a chase for nearly an hour after failing to yield to officers for a traffic stop in the area of Fremont Boulevard and Ferry Lane. Instead the driver, who was in a black Ford Explorer, entered northbound I-880. The man drove under the speed limit and exhibited drunken driving patterns. The officer followed him up until San Leandro, at which point CHP officers took over and pursued the driver all the way to San Francisco. The driver exited the northbound freeway and re-entered the freeway on the southbound side multiple times. The driver, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, evading police officers and driving on the wrong side of the roadway during a pursuit.

Drunk woman breaks window of apartment, can’t remember that she did it

Officers were sent to the 3600 block of Man Street on a report of a woman kicking at the front door of an apartment, climbing up the balcony and breaking a back window. Responding officers could not get any occupants of the apartment to respond so they waited for a while until the woman appeared in the window. Officers got the apartment key from the management to check on her welfare. The 20-year-old woman was drunk and couldn’t recall if she or an acquaintance at the apartment had broken the window. She was also found to be in possession of a bottle of medication that did not belong to her and was cited.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 23

Man arrested for hit-and-run

A 22-year-old man was arrested after fleeing the scene of an accident. Officers responded to the area of Washington Boulevard and Olive Avenue for a hit-and-run collision with injuries. The suspect fled the scene but the victim was able to find the suspect vehicle’s license plate in nearby bushes. Officers went to the home the license plate was registered where they convinced a woman to have her son return to the scene of the accident. The son came back and was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence and committing a hit-and-run. 

Residential burglary

Unknown suspects broke into a home on the 47000 block of Zunic Drive and made off with jewelry and an iPad.
