Crime Log: Adults Use 8-Year-Old to Steal from Target; Car Thief Found Hiding in Attic

A summary of recent crimes reported in Fremont.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Jan. 24 and Jan. 30 as released by the Fremont Police Department. 

THURSDAY, JAN. 24

Citizen catches prowler armed with knife

A citizen detained a prowler on his property in the area of Fairbanks Common and Maybird Circle. The suspect, an 18-year-old who allegedly had been harassing the family for months, was armed with a knife. When the citizen tried to detain the suspect, he was stabbed in the hand. Officers arrived and arrested the suspect.

Bar patrons chase down tagger

Two patrons at The Huddle bar on Mowry Avenue spotted a 25-year-old tagging on a wall at Orchard Supply. The two chased after the suspect and detained him at Azeveda Elementary School until police arrived. Officers determined that the suspect had tagged several businesses at the Mowry East shopping center and arrested him.

Adults use 8-year-old to help steal from Target

A man and women were spotted by security taking items at Target at the Fremont Hub and giving them to an 8-year-old child to conceal. The couple left the store without paying and were seen leaving the parking lot. Their vehicle was spotted shortly after at the Walmart on Albrae Street. The couple was arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary at both stores and the stolen merchandise was recovered. The children were put in protective custody.

Man arrested in strong-arm robbery

A man was robbed of his wallet by three male suspects in the area of Gilbert Avenue and Von Euw Common. The victim knew one of the suspects and was able to identify him in a photo lineup. Officers responded to the victim’s home and spotted the suspect vehicle. They conducted a high-risk stop and eventually arrested on man on suspicion of robbery.

MONDAY, JAN. 28

18-year-old found with dagger, weed for sale

Officers responded to Patterson Park around 7 p.m. on a report of three men smoking weed in the area. They approached the men and discovered one was in possession of a dagger and marijuana packaged for sales. Police have received numerous reports of activity at the park in the past few months including reports of gang members loitering in the area.

Car thief found hiding in attic

A man and women were arrested in the area of Bonito Drive after officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle. Officers arrived at around 11 p.m. and stopped the car. A 40-year-old man exited the car and started running eastbound across the street where he hopped over a fence. Police set up a perimeter and discover that the car was stolen. The man was eventually located in an attic of a Balboa Way home and was arrested on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, obstructing a police officer, possessing drug paraphernalia and prowling. His 44-year-old girlfriend was also arrested on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia.  

Attempted residential burglary

Three male suspects in dark clothing were spotted by a neighbor trying to break into a home on the 4000 block of Creekside Drive at about 10:30 p.m. The suspects ran away and got into a small dark car.

Burglary at Leman’s Karting

Leman’s Karting, located at 45957 Hotchkiss St., was broken into at about 1:15 a.m. A river rock was used to break the front window. The suspects made out with two cash register drawers.

Wanted parolee arrested

Officers were called to check on the welfare of a 25-year-old patient who walked away from Washington Hospital. It turned out that the patient was a parolee-at-large who was believed to be armed and dangerous. Officers found his vehicle outside of his girlfriend’s house on Regents Park where they had to do a surround and call out to get him out of the house. He was taken into custody without incident.

TUESDAY, JAN. 29

Stolen van found after suspects attempt to steal bike

A man wan was arrested after he and two other suspects attempted to steal a bike. The victim told police she witnessed a suspect cut her bike lock and ride off to a white Ford van. Officers responded and spotted the van on Chaucer and Paseo Padre Parkway. The officers tried to stop the van but it sped away. Officers had to call off the pursuit but located the van and three occupants at the end of Helston Court. The suspects then fled on bikes but one of the suspects, a 46-year-old man, was caught and identified as the driver of the van, which was determined to be stolen out of Foster City.

Two arrested for burglary and trespassing

An officer was flagged down by security at 4425 Technology Dr. A security alarm had gone off and a door was found open with a suspicious SUV nearby. The officer responded with assistance from the Newark police K-9. They eventually located a 51-year-old man and a 56-year-old man. They also found copper wiring and pipes in the SUV. One of the men was cited for trespassing and the other was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Residential burglaries

A home was broken into on the 300 block of Lippert Avenue between 7 and 9 p.m.

A home on the 4100 block of Vicente Street was burglarized between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 30

Residential burglaries

A burglary occurred on Parkmeadow Drive between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Jewelry and electronics were stolen.

Two cameras and a laptop were stolen from a home on Zunic Drive.
