Coroner's Officials Say Pedestrian Killed on I-880 was Fremont Resident

Joshua Tessman, 26, was hit as he walked away from a crash just south of High Street.

By Bay City News—

A pedestrian struck and killed in Oakland early this morning after walking away from a crash on Interstate Highway 880 has been identified as 26-year-old Joshua Tessman of Fremont, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

The California Highway Patrol received reports that a single car spun out on southbound Highway 880 just south of High Street at about 12:10 a.m., CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

That vehicle, later identified as a 1992 Toyota Tacoma truck, was blocking the middle lanes of the highway. Tessman left the vehicle and began walking north toward High Street, according to the CHP. A 2012 Dodge Charger traveling south on the highway at about 55 mph struck Tessman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP officials said.

The accident prompted the closure of lanes on Highway 880 for more than an hour, Van Eckhardt said. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the CHP's Oakland office at (510) 450-3821 or (800) TELL-CHP.
