FREMONT

Man Arrested After Trying to Hang Girlfriend

A Fremont man was arrested Sunday night after police said he attempted to kill his girlfriend by hanging her from a tree. Police were called to the 41500 block of Beatrice Street after the woman called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers she was tied up in the backyard. Police arrived and found the woman bounded with a rope around her neck that was connected to a tree. A 31-year-old man was eventually arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide. Niles Festival of Lights Parade Celebrates Start of Holiday Season

The holiday season officially kicked off in the Tri-Cities Friday night with the Niles Festival of Lights Parade.Families from all over lined the streets of historic downtown Niles to watch the 12th annual tradition. Wet weather caused a mudslide Friday that closed down state Highway 84 east of Fremont, California Highway Patrol officials said. The mudslide was spotted shortly before 6:30 a.m. on the highway, east of Palomares Road.

NEWARK

Rasputin Music to Open Early December

Rasputin Music will be returning to Newark next month. NewPark Mall management released a press release this week noting that the Bay Area music store will be opening its doors at NewPark Mall in early December. The store will be located in a 9,661-square-foot-space on the lower level of the mall near Sears. For more information, click here.

Burglaries Continue to Trend in Newark

Numerous burglaries and robberies were reported last week, making the weekly crime log one of the most read stories.  Police reported that among the items taken by suspects in the various home burglaries and robberies were a TV, jewelry, cash and a cell phone. Incoming School Board Member to be Sworn in Tuesday

Gary Stadler has been a parent volunteer at local schools for nearly a decade but in recent years, he’s wanted to contribute to Newark Unified School District more.Beginning Dec. 4, Stadler will have his chance to do so as the newest member of the Newark Unified School Board of Education. Stadler is primed for one of three open seats on the five-member board after only three individuals applied to run for three open seats. Stadler will replace incumbent Janice Schaefer who decided not to file for re-election. He’ll be sworn in 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 5715 Musick Ave.

UNION CITY

Union City’s longest serving mayor, Mark Green, was honored by regional and city leaders during a special ceremony to commemorate his two decades of service to Union City and the county on Tuesday night. Green’s 19-year tenure as mayor of Union City will come to an end when he is termed out next month. Green’s last City Council meeting as mayor is on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. at the City Hall. Mayor-elect Carol Dutra-Vernaci will also be sworn that night. Click here to read more.

New Kickboxing School Opens in Union City

A new kickboxing school has opened in town. Roots Kickboxing, located at 3996 Horner St. in the Old Alvarado neighborhood, opened Nov. 1 and is led by Jaime Calixto. A grand opening event is being planned for the new year, Calixto said. Roots trains students in various kickboxing disciplines, primarily Muay Thai. The school also offers a strength and conditioning program and plans to expand to mixed martial arts and jiu-jitsu.They offer three classes a day, including adult and youth (ages 6-14) classes. Logan Teacher Found Dead Last Month Died of Natural Causes

A veteran James Logan High School teacher whose body was found at the bottom of a ravine last month died of natural causes, according to media reports. According to the Marin Independent Journal, Christopher Ryan, 54, of Redwood City, died Oct. 11 due to complications related to heart disease. Ryan, who was believed to be at-risk, was reported missing Oct. 10. His car was found that night off of Interstate Highway 280 and Highway 92 with his cell phone and medication inside. Ryan worked at Logan since 1994 where he taught English and social science, as well as worked as a part-time administrator.His body was found the next day in a ravine along the Crystal Springs Reservoir.
