Update: Overhead Powerline Failure Knocks Out Electricity in Newark, Fremont

According to PG&E's, approximately 4,000 customers were without power Saturday morning.

A power outage has left thousands of customers in Fremont and Newark without electricity Saturday morning, according to PG&E officials.

Electricity was knocked out around 8:25 a.m. after an equipment failure of an overhead powerline occurred between Central Avenue and St. Isabel in Newark, said PG&E Spokesman J.D. Guidi.

The outage impacted approximately 4,035 customers, Guidi added.

PG&E crews are working to restore power, but there is no estimated time of restoration, Guidi said.

Fremont police have advised motorists to be careful at major intersections throughout town where power of traffic lights have been knocked out.

Fremont police sent out the following alert:

There is currently a power outage which is affecting the signal lights at multiple intersections in Fremont. For information on the outages and their expected durations, users are requested to visit the PG&E site- www.PGE.COM. Click on the outages link for a map.

Drivers are cautioned to treat intersections with either flashing red lights or no power at all as a four way stop.
