Fremont Among Reader's Digest's Top 10 Smartest Cities

The report looks at a city's education level, health conditions and sociability.

On the surface, Fremont might not have a whole lot in common with San Francisco, Portland or Seattle. There are no iconic landmarks within our borders. We aren’t a hipster haven. There are no TV shows about us.

We are, however, in their company when it comes to smarts.

Reader’s Digest has ranked Fremont as number 3 in their “America’s 10 Sharpest, Smartest Cities” report.

Released this month, the study examines a city’s education level, diet and exercise habits, sociability and health conditions.

What makes Fremont so special? A low smoking rate and a lot of creativity, according to the 90-year-old family magazine.

According to Reader’s Digest, less than 10 percent of the population smokes and one in 100 people in Fremont have received a patent for some sort of invention.

Fremont trails San Francisco, which ranked number 1 for its 30-plus farmers’ markets, and Arlington, Va., which earned marks for its above-average education rates.
