East Bay Teen Shines on X-Factor

Johnny Maxwell, a 16-year-old junior at Castro Valley High, has advanced to the next stage of Fox TV's The X-Factor. Now he goes to Boot Camp.

Castro Valley teen Johnny Maxwell is going to Boot Camp.

Music Boot Camp that is.

Earlier this year the 16-year-old junior at Castro Valley High auditioned in a Fox TV talent show called The X Factor.

Thursday night, when his performance aired on national TV, Maxwell's friends learned that he had cleared the first in a series of hurdles that will ultimatelty lead one lucky contestant to a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music.

Maxwell creates his own raps using the Apple software, “Garage Band.”

He has started a YouTube channel where he performs original songs and covers. For instance, check out his cover of Chris Brown’s “Don’t Wake Me Up" in the video above.

Maxwell can't talk about what comes next in his musical odyssey. The rules require contestants to remain mum about the competition.

But the Boot Camp segments of The X-Factor will begin to air on October 3rd -- when local fans will have another chance to cheer on this Castro Valley crooner.
