Letter to the Editor: Fremont Resident Wants Water Use Accountability in Community

Letter submitted by Steven Ham:

We are constantly reminded, hounded, even nagged to get us to conserve water. My lawn is barely kept alive because I water only a few minutes a week.

It upsets me when I see a double standard so blatantly ignoring the pleas to save water. Apartment complexes, government buildings, parks, industrial parks, retail stores, including malls, all seem to have lush green lawns. Obviously all that green grass on the golf courses, and the afore mentioned entities means lots of water. Increases in the number of fires that use precious water ... Bursting old pipes don’t help either.

While we may not be able to predict the bursting pipes and fires, we certainly should be able to do something about the waste of water in the commercial, apartments and government entities.

I believe heavy fines should be levied on those water wasters or I should also be able to use as much water as I desire to ensure a lush green lawn. There is an old saying that says that "what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If it isn’t, it should be."
