Fremont Named Fifth Best Run City in America

National financial news website 24/7 Wall St. has ranked Fremont No. 5 in its annual “Best Run Cities in America” report. 

The study ranks the 100 largest cities in the country based on factors such as poverty, education, crime, unemployment, credit rating and regional gross domestic product.

According to the report, Fremont was selected because, “It has one of the most educated and high-earning populations in America, with over 51 percent of residents age 25 and older holding a college degree in 2011.”

In 2011, the median household income was $92,664 — the highest among large cities in the U.S., according to 24/7 Wall St. 

The report also gives a nod to Fremont’s low crime rate — 1.77 violent crimes per 1,000 people — and the city’s strong manufacturing base, naming Western Digital, Seagate and Tesla Motors among the larger operations in Fremont. 

Fremont is the only Bay Area city in the top 10 list. San Francisco is the closest, ranking 11th with Irvine, the only other California city to make break the top 10 threshold, ranking No. 3. 

Plano, Texas was ranked the best run city in the nation, with Madison, Wis. in second place.

Last year, Fremont was named the No.1 city for tech start-ups, according to SizeUp.com, and the in the nation in a Readers Digest report.
